well, upon the suggestion of some monkeys, I went swimming last night.

a little background on my swimming. I think my parents threw me in a pool at age 1 and I took right to it. we had a family swim night every wednesday for years when I was a little child, then in highschool we had swimming as part of our gym classes. so I've been able to swim pretty well my whole life. (never competed, just splashed around and pee'd in the pool :oink: )

but it's been obout 20 years since I've been in a pool. So I jump into one of the lanes and start to paddle. I get about half way to the other end, maybe 25 yards/meters and I have to stop because
1. I forgot when/how to breath when swimming
2. I was really really tired.

I did two laps, down and back and was ready to get out of the pool. :help:

I stayed and did six or eight more laps though. when I got out, I felt like really weird. but I felt even weirder when I went to shower the pool scum off and realized I didn't bring a change of clothes. I didn't want to take off my wet shorts to shower then put them back on so I just washed the pool scum off the best I could. I felt like the guy in high school that showered in his underware. haha.

In june i got the stupid idea in my head to do an xterra.

i thought i could get by training without using a pool by doing some extra weight lifting and running and then a decided to go for a swim a month before the race.

BIG MISTAKE! I made it 2 laps and my lungs were BURNING!

I wanted to use arm floaties for the race but they wouldn't let me.
So my swim time for a half mile was 30 minutes.

 30 min? 1/2 mile swim should be like 6-7 min at a slow pace.

I almost used one of those paddle board things. it was pretty bad. the only thing I could think of was "at least no one here knows me...." :p

It was bad and i wasn't even the last one out of the river.

It was a bad way to start off a really long race, it took me about 8 miles on the bike for my lungs to start to recover from the swim.

Anyway...painful memories to re-live. :dead:

I'll be better prepared next year, maybe.

if you can swim a 800 in 6-7 minutes you would be in Athens right now beating the hell out of the entire long distance competition. A so-so time for a 1600 would probably be more around 10-12 minutes, but don't get discouraged because your first swim in years was tough. It's a damn hard sport to just pick right up.
