Here's a simple (if not completely accurate way). I use it when I'm too lazy to put the wheel in the truing stand.
Get the bike up in a stand (or at least wheels off the ground so they can spin). Use a zip tie around either a frame tube or fork and cut it so it just barely clears the rim (you can adjust the clearance based on the rotation of the zip tie if you leave it a little long). Snug it up pretty tight so that your reference point isn't moving around.
Spin wheel. See where the zip tie brushes the rim. Make note of how long of a section is "off". Spin that section to the bottom (I use my hand to mark the general area) and then tighten the spokes connected to the side of the hub (COUNTERclockwise) a tiny bit at a time on the side you want to pull the rim TOWARDS while doing the corresponding loosening on the side you want the rim to pull FROM. Go in very small increments (1/8th turn or something at a time) and give the wheel a little bit to adjust between each set of corrections. I hope that makes sense.
