Hey there,

I need some advice. I think that the bolt in my lower swingarm might go in hard because it was very hard to get out. It seems to thread ok but I wanted to run a tap though it and make sure that all is good. The bike is a 2002 intense M1. I think the threads are in bad shape because they were so crusted onto the bolt. The bolt threads fine by hand but I tried tightening it and it wouldn't catch. I have a whole set of taps and dies if that helps any.

The bolt looks ok. I just wanted to clean the swingarm threads up. Please let me know if this is necessary and what to do.

Chris

I have a wierd feeling that something else might be wrong. I can't think of how dirt could get into that area. Maybe you should order a new pivot bolt?

I have the same frame, but it is kind of difficult to tell exactly what you are asking. Did you remember to remove the set screws that keep the bolt from backing out? They are a large/coarse thread. If you know that you have the correct tap/die, oil 'er up and clean it. I have a full tap/die set and thats an easy way to clean them.

OR, find a stiff wire pipe-cleaner type brush and use some degreaser to scrub the threads clean, then relube.

Not the set screw, that guy is not a problem.

You know how you have that giant bolt that threads into the otherside of the lower chainstay? The big black bolt is fine. Threads look good. It was just in there so hard when I had to remove it because I think the preivous owner didn't take care of anything on it. When I took it out and looked at it it didn't look too bad, and it threads in by hand no problem. I just wanted to clean it out.

I noticed on alot of the bolts there was this green crusty stuff that really stinks on them. It was all dried up and just stuck to the bolts. I cleaned most of them off but I think some of this stuff is in the threads on the other side of the chainstay.

What kind of oil do you use? Does it just need to be lubricated someway?

I read that and actually said "Awe crap!" out loud. I think what you are explaining is LocTite. LocTite is color-coded and the green stuff is of the stronger variety.
What I thought of when I read you followup is that I am 90% sure that the big bolt passes directly through the bearings. That is why it is tight. It has been close to a year since I pulled mine so I can't remember for sure.
If you want to clean the LocTite off and redo it, regular chain oil works well, or a mild solvent. Just remember to clean the area with some rubbing alcohol when you are done so that the LocTite will dry.
I would call Intense rather than trust my hunches.
