I've been a bike rider all my life, but never really paid attention to which bikes I rode (usually just the cheapest, knock off brand I could afford). I'm finally in a place with amazing bike trails (Tennessee) and would love to get a really good quality bike that is one (1) of excellent quality and (2) will be good to do some potential off road-ing. Any suggestions?

You should probably give us a bit more information...

1) What type of riding you doing? XC DH FR
2) What sort of budget do you have
3) Are you willing to buy a root beer colored bike?
4) Do you own a wok, or do you rent?

This should give us enough fodder to keep you endlessly informed on what bike to purchase.

It's all about figuring out how much you want to spend, and how far into the sport you think you are going to get.

Since you said "potential off roading" I'm guessing that you were thinking about dropping a few hundred, and you haven't really done much in the way of mountain biking yet.

In that case try something like this, or check ebay for something in your size:

Want something a little more capable, this is about the best bang for your buck that you're going to find anywhere: http://www.speedgoat.com/Catalog.aspx/Browse?Cat=C186&Prod=20271

I would get an Bullit. Can be used for all disciplines, comes in RootBeer, looks good with a wok, and shouldn't make your rental place look like a total sh!thole.
