She gets $57.

The court-appointed lawyers who defended her attacker get $4 million.

I swear one of these days I'm gonna snap.
Change the Constitution and take away the right to counsel and it'll be all good. Notice how the state picked up the tab and didn't seize his assets to pay the bill.

Interesting in what should they do in a case like this. Should the state be responsible for the judgement if they were responsible for the defense?

Here is the solution. Too bad nobody has the balls to implement it:

Make "public defender" a mandatory unpaid duty for lawyers, just like the rest of us get "jury duty".

Problem f*cking solved.

of course its not a solution, but how is it not at least a step in the right direction?

just exactly WHY do lawyers deserved the exorbitant fees they charge?
I expect they'd have you believe that they are fundamental to keeping the wheels of justice and freedom greased, and keeping America the fairest country in the world.

we, commie wannabes, have something along the lines of that.

every fresh graduate from med school has, by law, to work full time for the government in public hospitals anywhere around the country for 1 year with a "nominal" pay (400 bucks a month! plus living expenses) before they get a license. i had a cousin who got sent to a village in the middle of nowhere 12000ft above sea level for 1 year.

lawyers have to do the same, but is not as bad. my sister worked for 1 year for 300 bucks a month for people who cant afford lawyers in a place to defend women against domestic violence. fortunately hers was part-time while she was at school in a place supported by her school.

it kinda sucks, because is a drag for the economy to delay those kids advancement.. but at the same time, it kinda helps the needy. so according to "the people" screw the innocent and make them work for a year for basically free.

supply and demand.
plus, lawyers are like doctors sometimes... you just dont have time to shop around, plus is kinda hard to rank their qualities at a glance.

on the topic, they should part out the guy.

money obtained from the sale of kidneys, corneas, pancreas, liver, skin, etc, etc should go to the victims.

I bet it makes them better doctors and lawyers than if they didn't do that.

well yeah, they screw people who cant complain, so they sweep the mistakes of the learning phase under the rug. plus that people probably wouldnt get to see a doctor/lawyer otherwise.

but right now, am in the phase of loosing all sympathy i have for people who get stuff for free, have 8-9 kids, and complain nobody is doing anything for them and that they need more, way more.

It's not surprising that the people who created the ridiculously complicated and inefficient legal system (lawyers and judges, i.e. ex-lawyers) are the people who make millions from administering it. A little conflict of interest maybe? It's like the company that created FDS and then sold women on the idea that they couldn't live without it.

Genius once again. I didn't manipulate anything. If you suck, you have no power to give people points.

I'd always thought you were overcompensating for something with your truck, now you've just made that perception ever clearer. Can't you ignore yourself for me?

Yes, the $$$ was a joke. However, the last sentence of the article, I feel says it all. She's alive, and he's gone to jail. For those that know my story (when are we going on a ride, Echo?), you can understand my feelings of agreement with that. Lawyers should not be paid what they get, unless they earn it for those they are representing (gee, much like a government BY the people FOR the people???).
