Ann Romney:
"Stop it. This is hard. You want to try it? Get in the ring," she said. "This is hard and, you know, it’s an important thing that we’re doing right now and it’s an important election and it is time for all Americans to realize how significant this election is and how lucky we are to have someone with Mitt’s qualifications and experience and know-how to be able to have the opportunity to run this country."

As good a place as any: Mitt Romney overpays his taxes to prove that rich Americans (running for president) pay an adequate amount of taxes.

In 2011, Romney earned $14 million, mostly from investments that are taxed at a lower, preferential rate. He also gave a very large amount of money to charity—more than $4 million. So, thanks to the charitable deduction in the tax code, he was technically allowed to reduce the amount of income subject to the income tax even further.

The trouble is, if Romney did that, he would have ended up paying less than 13 percent of his income in federal taxes (back-of-the-envelope calculations suggest the amount would have likely been somewhere around 9 to 11 percent). That would have conflicted with his statement in August that he has paid at least 13 percent the past ten years. So Romney opted to limit his charitable deduction to just $2.25 million, essentially agreeing to pay the government more in taxes than he needed to. In the end, Romney had an effective federal tax rate of 14.1 percent.
So basically if he wasn't running for president (and LEGALLY required to release his tax returns), he would have paid somewhere between a 9 and 11% tax rate. But since he said that he always paid at least 13% in taxes, he overpaid this year. And we're supposed to believe that even when he wasn't running for president, he overpaid as well? Seriously?

His campaign even admits that he overpaid because of a "promise to the American people". Ugh....

Romney Campaign said:
He has been clear that no American need pay more than he or she owes under the law. At the same time, he was in the unique position of having made a commitment to the public that his tax rate would be above 13%. In order to be consistent with that statement, the Romneys limited their deduction of charitable contributions.
Lastly, while his accounting firm is acknowledging that he never paid below 13.6% over the past 20 years, the campaign is also not answering whether he filed any amended tax returns (ie, "redid" his previous taxes and wrote a big fat check to the IRS) or not.

No wonder this all came out on a Friday afternoon...

Oh, and apparently (FINALLY!) Mitt Romney and I agree on something!!! Holy smokes!

Mitt Romney said:
I don't pay more than are legally due and frankly if I had paid more than are legally due I don't think I'd be qualified to become president... I'd think people would want me to follow the law and pay only what the tax code requires.

I hear a lot of comparisons between Romney's tax rate and that of a family with $50k income. Correct me if I am wrong but the average family gets it's income from working and not from returns on wealth. Workers efforts also contribute to payroll taxes. Wouldn't a better comparison place more of a burden on the working family?

Chris Hayes just had a great point: Mitt can go back and file an amendment at *any* time to claim those extra deductions that he didn't originally claim. So the day after the election (win or lose) he can send a request to the IRS for his $250k (that he graciously overpaid) back......

I finally have something in common with the AARP. We both hate Paul Ryan.

That dip**** teacher's pet schoolboy routine just doesn't look good when you're older than 12.

He did a PowerPoint presentation for the crowd. According to the National Journal, be began thusly: “ ‘I’m kind of a PowerPoint guy, so I hope you’ll bear with me,’ Ryan told the audience as he began clicking through four slides, which showed graphs depicting U.S. debt held by the public from 1940 to present, debt per person in the United States, percentage of debt held by foreign countries and a breakdown of federal spending. He then launched into a 10-minute monologue on the federal debt.”

A word about PowerPoint. PowerPoint was released by Microsoft in 1990 as a way to euthanize cattle using a method less cruel than hitting them over the head with iron mallets. After PETA successfully argued in court that PowerPoint actually was more cruel than iron mallets, the program was adopted by corporations for slide show presentations.

Conducting a PowerPoint presentation is a lot like smoking a cigar. Only the person doing it likes it. The people around him want to hit him with a chair.
Dan Senor, one of Romney’s closest advisers, has kept a tight grip on Ryan, traveling with him everywhere and making sure he hews to the directions of the Romney “brain trust” in Boston. (A brain trust, rumor has it, that refers to Ryan as “Gilligan.”)
