Remy Thirion went OTB over the last jump, resulting in a broken collarbone, a few broken rips and two broken vertebrae...
Qualifying was on hold afterwards as he had to be heli lifted.
Get well soon Remy!
Fuck! horrible!
:(
Hope he's ok.

1.5 months between the 1st race and the 2nd race, 1 week between the 2nd race and the 3rd race. Well done UCI!

Regardless, it's time to take stock of the important factors which will decide the podium tomorrow. Onward and upward!

* Like @Sandro , this track is old, boring and no one likes it. I have further determined that this track is not Champery (Sam Hill version) or Schladming (any version).

* The entomology for "Leogang" is of Coptic origin, roughly translating into "posse of big fucking cats"

* WW1 was essentially started in Austria when Arch Duke Fernie got popped, and WW2 was started by a runty psychotic dildo born in Austria. A less than ideal track record.

* In "The Sound of Music", the male lead was a Captain in the Austrian Navy, which always seemed odd to me since they are land locked. Kinda want that job (but not his bevy of kids).

* Because @Gary is a hateful, mud hole loving dick, he will probably tell me these diabetes wafers are in fact, not made in Vienna, nor are real fingers used in their manufacture

* This is a stupid fucking letter thing they like to spell stuff with in Austria - ß
I mean, its like a ghey B or something...and lets face it, America language has been around since the time of white hippie jeebus, so clearly these euro assholes got the application wrong.

* Furthermore, I think its pretty obvious Austria also stole America coffee store/diabetes dispensary concept from us. See, here's a copy cat Vienna coffee haus (which in their defense, is a better way of spelling "house") -

Now look at the original version of our coffee Cracker Barrel haus (I believe this location dates back to the early 15th century)

I don't know about you, but I don't see one fat guy in a camo hoodie in the Vienna coffee haus...I bet those dumb asses hardly have any diabetes...Like I said, fraudulent.

Ok, now that I've guzzled down a venti sized cup of sugary haterade iced coffee, let's set'em up and knock'em down:

1. Greg Minnaar - He's on a 29er...He beats Aaron Gwin by 45 seconds. Kidwoo commits ceremonial seppeku. Jeremy R is there to finished the deal with the decap sword.

2. My Dad: Well I bet no one saw that one coming, eh? But the clock doesn't lie, and even though we're talking about a man in his mid-70s, overweight and a dedicated road biker, this alleged race track isn't a mountain bike course after all, but a glorified time trials course. My pops dons a size too small spandex jersey and some baggies (because UCI ya know) and lays down a solid 94 average watts pace down the hill atop his shitty Felt road bike. Upon crossing the finish line he exclaims he's ridden rougher velodromes than Leogang and heads straight to the bier haus...Drinks on me tonight old man.

3. My Daughter: It's official now, this is a jackalope family affair! My little precious get's it done with her Trek Mt. Two Twenty (Rachel who?), replete with a Dora bell and handle bar streamers, smashing corners and invisible rocks with a viciousness that will likely serve her well as when she becomes a teenager in 6 years. With spun gold blonde hair and crystal blue eyes, many locals mistake for a native Austrian, but she clears that up quickly when pronounces the letter "B" correctly. Drinks on me tonight ya little rascal!

4. @Mo(n)arch : Everyone's favorite (evil) Italian robot scientist makes the quick jaunt to "Really, I swear we're not Germany" to make a stunning ascent to a podium step. Laying waste to the course on a bizarre transformer robot that changes from a Sybian into a mountain bike (albeit, one that is decidedly uncomfortable for some), the Italian stallion makes a fine showing in his virgin WC experience. He then proceeds to explain why Italian roast coffee is superior to the aforementioned fraudulent Vienna swill.

5. Jared Kushner - well, well, well, what do we have here? Well nothing of course! Jared just happened to be travelling back from, umm, Mauskow (a little known village in the extreme northeastern part of Ukraine) and thought he'd try to procure some Austrian, umm, "working ladies" for the POTUS. But while cruising the dark alleys of Vienna on his Bentley edition Segway, he makes a wrong turn and ends up blazing down the Leogang track. With nary a bump insight, America's slimiest looking D-bag makes quick work of the course and he nails down the last podium step. That said, he is confused when they break out the champagne and he doesn't see any hookers peeing on things.

Fraus -

1. Trace - time to start a new streak! Hugs from across the pond!
2. Rachel's bike
3. Tahnee - the microscopic wheels are still holding her back
4. Pom Pom - Your day is coming soon
5. Manon - at least there's no shitty sloughs here

I wonder what's with the wind in that area. Not only quite a few riders had hard crashes there but few friends of mine also got blown of jumps in the final jump area of Leogang.

I like watching Rachel ride a lot because she's just so damn quick, but it didn't suck getting to watch a race that wasn't a foregone conclusion that the top 3 riders were separated by ~2s rather than 10s

Same here. A guy from my area was racing and trying to qualify, and he a clean run down to that last jump and the wind got him with a hard crash.

Bruni is in the hospital aswell...
Seems like he hurt a vein or something in his leg.
Congrats to the women though. It was actually good to watch it. Especially the top five were great to watch!

I ended up really wanting Gwin to take it! looks like it won't be too long until he equals Minnaar's overall wins. kinda hoping YT just don't bother coming out with a 29 DH bike at all.
Anybody know what was up with minnaars left hand controls?
Kerr makes the podium!!
Greenland seems to have made it to top tier consistency... would a pedal stroke or 2 in the last 10secs have got him on the podium? Who knows.
Shaw 7th Was it him who had the busted chain dragging in his cassette/wheel?
Sick mick 8th with a flat
Moir 9th with an actual crash
Danny 11th no chain
2 regular podium guys injured before the final

This close forTV racing's not actually all that bad viewing is it? :P

Maybe the Shimano guy(it can't possibly be more than one guy can it?) working on 2018 SAINT should concentrate his effort on designing a decently reliable chain.

For the amount of bitching going on, you'd have thought WC DH was as lame as enduro! Amazing race- seeing the best in the world just destroy something a mortal can ride is pretty breathtaking.

Looks like the young guns are finally making good on that promise to take over the circuit that everybody has been talking about for the past 7-8 years!

Just kidding, Gwin and Minnaar are dominating as per usual.

But seriously, I know Loic gets credit as the fast one of the two (Loic/Loris) but I think this is Loris year to win his first WC, he's really on point and doesn't have all the injuries that Loic has had to shake his confidence.

¡Mira, una ardilla!
Greatly surprised by Moir, he managed to stay in the fight for the top, even after his front wheel skipped.

Gwin is the Federer of DH. He thinks of lines nobody else seems to spot, and has a winning hunger the size of Texas.

I for one welcome a season so contended as this one. And even when Rachel is at another level, watching the rest of the girls have close battles is really entertaining.

Weren't you complaining that they are building tracks for TV? Or was it someone else?

It was a great race to watch even if many riders don't like riding it. Though I'm wondering if the low margins translate to more risky riding and that's why we had so many crashes on the track

I'll complain that they're building them for tv. If that's even the case. Watching 30 dudes coast in a tuck on a dirt road is not 'good tv' for someone who's actually a mountain biker.

Guys catching pedals, putting together gnarly gaps in chunder, and getting buck wild in some holes is good tv though. If I want to watch smooth two wheel on the ground action I'll watch moto gp. Other than a couple of standouts like gwin and mic hannah on b-line, that race was still decided in the woods and the 'used to be' woods.

Leo has a problem that the local farmers won't allow them to steer away from the mid, flat part. The track wasn't really build for TV like someone, Leo DH always was like this. Also people forget back in the day we had this track called Wilingen which was much shorter than Leo and had NO technical section. I really think nothing in trailbuilding has really changed. Simply the venues with money now are venues with the tracks most of us don't like.

One thing that makes me wonder is whether UCI requirements for venues have changed so fewer places can afford it.

@Gary sorry for that mate.

Props to minaar for getting on the UCI about getting that lip flatter(before qualies I think), shame it wasn't changed before remi's, lachlans and a few other's crashes.
Nah mate, if the riders want a section changed because its dangerous and stupid then they need to learn to ride better. It's ill-thought-out sections that seperate the men from the boys. And the bones from their joints.

as bad as that video of Remi is, and it is, there is another from the opposite side of the track that looks even hugerer and more awful. can't seem to link, use googles if you must.

How? Does it show him landing in lava or a pit of sharks or something? Deadset thats a colossal crash - as kidwoo pointed out, it is scarily similar to Waddel's crash. It seems that he is going to be ok though - but I would not have been surprised if the outcome had been otherwise.

I love that kid. What a great and fun dude. He also was riding on the edge, to me the most exciting run of the day. I hoped that he got the win, but the Gwinner was definitely unstoppable.
And Minnaar had to adjust his levers during the race run as he had to much throw and kept overshooting his breaking points...o_O

Wasn't there another guy having sort of trouble with the brand's brakes in a certain not so unimportant race on that track?
