Alcohol and pornographic material are to be banned in some indigenous communities in the north of Australia after a report claimed "rivers of grog" were fuelling the sexual abuse of children.

Little Children are Sacred, the 316-page report of the Inquiry into the Protection of Aboriginal Children from Sexual Abuse, said lack of education and alcoholism were the chief causes of child abuse in all 45 indigenous communities in the Northern Territory. Children as young as three were exposed to hardcore pornographic videos at home and had seen adults having sex, desensitising them to sexual behaviour.

Local police officers were accused of turning a blind eye to a "rampant informal sex trade" between Aboriginal girls aged 12 to 15 and non-Aboriginal local mineworkers, who paid the girls in alcohol, cash and other goods. Alcohol was used as a "bartering tool" by black and white men for sex with under-age girls, the report added.

Not to minimize the effect that showing hardcore porn to young children has (mind you, humans have seen adults having sex for thousands of years, and we got this far) but shouldn't the proper response be to do something about the mine workers too?

Life expectancy is way below Australian national average, alcoholism and domestic violence are rife and various governments have employed such cruel policies as forcibly removing Aboriginal children from their parents in a huge scale.

Well, this not being too serious a question but - (it's always been white devils around here anyway) - but not all indigenous populations are oppressed by ex-Europeans; there has been a history of population migration and ethnic groups have been displaced prior to European colonisation in areas such as North America. So how long does and ethnic group need to occupy land before they become indigenous?

In the new world for the purposes of this forum shall we say the existing inhabitants of Canada, USA, Australia and NZ at the time of European colonisation.

Returning to the original point whether a people are idigenous or not should really be irrelevant when it comes to rights & treatment. That any group of people should suffer the discrimination that the Aboriginies do is clearly wrong (unless you are a Nazi).

It's not exactly true that there are no Aborigines in Tasmania, there's just no "full blood" (for want of a better word) Aborigines and they've essentially been de-tribalised and largely assimilated. Still, point taken.

Id say we've come a long way since enslaving natives, forcing them to march to Oklahoma, murdering them for fun, etc. Now, people might not be taking on the responsibility of curing the social ills like aboriginal child molestation, but it hasnt exactly gotten worse since, say, the 1800s.

The US has improved in the last 200 years, sadly other places have not. The Jews had a pretty hard time of it in the last 200 years, improving somewhat since 1945. Then there are the Bosnian Serbs, the Darfur Sudanese, the Palestinians, the Hutu/Tutsi conflict in Rwanda (that continues to this day in DR Congo), the Kurds and Armenians have reason to feel discriminated against... Outside the US the world is not necessarily improving and modern weaponry means increasingly effective discrimination.

Yeah but Aussie is one of the worse cases.... Hell it was legal for a while to hunt abo's for sport!
Until the 1950's or 60's (I think... memory is a bit hazy from school days) Aboriginies were not counted on the census (sheep and cattle however were counted).
