they are basicly a pinch bolt. actually they are shaft collars that are really small.

they are round and have a hole in them. on the side is a threaded shaft that has an alen wrench headed bolt that is used to tighten the brake cable.

they are used to hold model airplane wheels on the landing gear of the plane....

AND they are used to shorten the top gyro cable, at the gyro end of the cable.

the picture is of a shaft collar. use your imagination and think of it being small enough that your brake cable would just slide through. these work great, if used correctly. but they are often too small to tighten down tight enough to hold your cable well.

they do make better ones specificly for bikes these days but we used to use them and then solder them on to add extra strength. I never had one that I soldered slip on me.
