WASHINGTON - A highly classified National Intelligence Estimate assembled by some of the government’s most senior analysts this summer provided a pessimistic assessment about the future security and stability of Iraq.

At worst, the official said, were “trend lines that would point to a civil war.” The official said it “would be fair” to call the document “pessimistic.”

The estimate contrasts with public comments of Bush and his senior aides who speak more optimistically about the prospects for a peaceful and free Iraq. “We’re making progress on the ground,” Bush said at his Texas ranch late last month.
This is not a Bush bash i think he's smart, he's got half of you duped into thinking he's got a handle on things.

So with all the great deep thinking monkies here, what's an alternative view on an exit plan of this situation. Everybody and their brother know if we up and leave the puppet regime will collapse and an islamic state will arise in it's wake. But we might fight fruitlessly for years and years like Nam and the same damn thing might happen...

So what's the solution.

Here's a thought. How about splitting up the region into different soveriegn nations. Divide Iraq into 3 or 4 different countries, let Kurdistan have thier own nation, splice em up and let troubled regions have it out with each other, in their own civil war. Not saying it will work but it's an idea.

This is our Afghanistan (which I credit with actually breaking Russians back not Reagan, kind of ironic we are there too). We will lose our asses there because....we didn't think things out! It is a no-win situation. The rest of America will see the light when troup deaths equal 10,000. G-Dubs father knew the deal. Shame G-Dub was listening to the wrong folks. We will get punked there is my prediction. No solution can be offered here sorry.....jdcamb

i think the plan of splitting up iraq into tribal states seems reasonable. coming up with borders that satisfy all parties involved would be near impossible tho...

Well let them get busy gripin with each other on little borders instead of the focus being on non-Iraqi's killing the infidels. Looking at this board we can tell how many unintelligent folks there are in america i have got to believe the number is greater in Iraq.
We need security on the region because our industrialism relies on oil. How can localized infighting hurt the business as usual selling of oil. They'll be more busy fighting for their own interests than being bored and killing us.
*edit*plus they'll then need to sell oil to buy weapons from us, hooray i should be a dictator of Aruba.*edit*

I think the best chance for long term success in the middle east would be to build a time machine, send an ICMB back in time to exterminate a small band of apes that decided to get out of the trees and walk upright.

Yup shame on me for not having hope. Yup shame on me for losing 4 years of my life working for the Gubmint. Yup shame on me for having a better idea how the Gubmint really works then most folks. Yup shame on me for realizing its a big frikkin game on a global level were folks just like you and I die trying to satisfy somebodys bottomline or to artificially prop up a way of life. Yup shame on me for just walking by that homeless guy in the parking garage this morning, hey how did I know he was a veteran? Yup shame on me for being honest and not offering up a BS solution to your discussion......jdcamb

The killer log would only break your legs. There are worse punishments of which i do not speak. Better to stay ignorant of such things.....

On tv i watched as our troops approach one of the hostile towns. There the soldiers attempted to win the hearts and minds of the villagers who we had recently bombed by giving them $1500 to fix a mosque and handed out propaganda radios, which the villagers smashed after the soldiers left......

Come on......

How about grabbing tons of freindly muslims and getting yer frikkin mitts dirty and working a hard day with these people and fix the goddamn mosque....

Winning hearts and minds.... fleh.....

Since Bush believes in updating our nuclear arsenal, why don't we just launch all the old models into the middle east - then we have the whole terrorism thing solved, the oil is so far underground it will still be there. We control the oil and have room for those shiny new Nukes...

i have gray hair too pal so let's agree to agree. i fully realize that my idealistic rants will fall short than being just an amusement to a minute number of folk on this board. but i also see alot of overboard seriousness as well in which i deal with satire. i understand and can appreciate your frustrations and my post was not meant to belittle your perceptions and outlook. So for my post i apologize, but i will remain being me.

since your proposal is actually the undoing of what the UK (& france?) did some 50-70 years ago, i'm going to poo-poo it.

whitey should not be seen there, only do special ops a-la spectre/spooky; some good war pr0n. Make friends w/ the unsavories & start a revolt from within; kinda like how we almost tried right after gulf-war 1.

these are tribalist who are only one thin layer above african tribalists; we can get some mileage from superstition, but won't close the deal. Just before it goes red giant, let france take over. THEN, it would surely become another vietnam. Only, we won't bail them out.

Kurdistan won't happen, unless you want Turkey to invade the day after American troops leave...
Or maybe they'd just displace their entire Kurdish population there and put their entire military on the border...

And then invade...

Yeah, that might be a problem. Ethnic cleansing is bad, right? Even if our allies do it?

Hasn't been a problem for what, a decade or two? Why should it be a problem now?

this US-Iraq war is nothing more than the down-payment on a veeeeeeeeeeeeery long mortage, in which the US acquired Iraqs problems, and Iraq nothing else but a a face, a scapegoat, a common enemy in which to funnel all its internal conflicts.

way to go dubya!!!!
you just bought yourself a few generations of hatred towards the US and a new litter of terrorists PLUS some leverage in the oily ME, for the very "convinient" price of couple thousand US soldiers.

Yeah, dubya had no idea wat he was getting himself into. Why should he worry, all he does is give orders behind a wall in DC.

I like the idea of dividing Iraq into seperate states. But you have to (like silver said) realize that besides Turkey crossing the border, you'd have to worry about Iran crossing the border also. They're famous for hatred of the Kurds also. Come to think of it does anyone like the Kurds? Then you have the Shiites. NO ONE likes them at all. If you'd ever sit down and talk to one for even 15 minutes you'd understand why. These guys are straight up loony. They're tolerant of others and their religions, but the ideas they have about government are out of the 15th century. But they make good tea.

So, lets go the idea of a HUGE game of extreme dodgeball. Last one standing gets the country.
