Bill Clinton advises Dubai as Hillary attacks its US ports deal
Mar 02 10:11 AM US/Eastern

Former president Bill Clinton has privately advised Dubai officials how to address US political concerns over a controversial ports deal, as his wife, Senator Hillary Clinton, publicly attacks the deal.

Dubai Ports World bid to takeover Britain's P and O, which runs terminal operations at six major US ports, has triggered a political firestorm in the United States.

Senator Clinton has voiced vigorous opposition to the 5.7-billion-euro (6.8-billion-dollar) takeover, saying it threatens US national security.

She is attempting to push legislation through Congress that seeks to block the deal, partly on the grounds that DP World is foreign-government owned.

Meanwhile, the Financial Times reported Thursday her husband -- who it said was paid 300,000 dollars in 2002 to address a summit in Dubai -- has advised Dubai officials how to soothe US concerns over the deal.

"Mr. Clinton, who this week called the United Arab Emirates a 'good ally to America,' advised Dubai's leaders to propose a 45-day delay to allow for an intensive investigation of the acquisition," the FT said, citing a spokesman for the ex president.

DP World has agreed with the White House to undertake a more lengthy review process of the deal, despite already received government approval for it to proceed.

The takeover would see DP World run ports at Baltimore, Miami, New Jersey, New Orleans, New York and Philadelphia.

A court in London was due to give a ruling on Wednesday on the legality of DP World's takeover of the Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Co.

Sen. Clinton: Rove obsesses about me
Tuesday, February 28, 2006; Posted: 9:08 a.m. EST (14:08 GMT)

ALBANY, New York (AP) -- Reacting to a new book quoting Karl Rove as saying she will be the 2008 Democratic nominee for president, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton said Monday that President Bush's chief political strategist "spends a lot of time obsessing about me."

OK... I am fuzzy on something... Why would we need ANY foreign company to manage our ports?

I am guessing that the ports and thier management is a private corporation thing (Not owned by gov't), right? So, is there no qualified or competent company or people here in America that can do the job? Is this all just more Bush evil in an attempt to make his friends even richer?

I just don't understand all this politics stuff... :ouch: :nonono:

Because the American voting public is inherantly racist, AND unable to differentiate in any real way between one Arab country and another. Well done George.

P&O (prior owner/manager of the ports in dispute) is a PRIVATE company. the house of lords or commons, or tony blair, or any other powdered wig-wearer has no say in its operation.

contrast this w/ the proposed owner, which as i understand it, is controlled by the Dubai (UAE) government.

i don't care if the next prospective owner was controlled by the government of *any* country. keep it in private business hands.

My question on this has always been is there not a US company that is capable of running US port operations? With all the uproar lately over outsourcing, you'd think they'd at least try to find a US company to do this...I mean doesn't Haliburton have a division that can do this :)

I thnk they are just as bad off as they would be with ANYONE. They are a huge security risk, period.

There is next to nothing done to secure them now, so a change in management means nothing.

I have to agree something is fishy.

Nothing wrong with an ex-president advising a US ally about acquiring US property.

Nothing wrong a senator speaking against it.

Something wrong about these two people sleeping together and not knowing something is up.

Unless...

Obiously the USA has a big military as we all know. But USA is failing economicaly!!!!!!!!
If we are the most powerful nation on the planet-then why aren't WE buying the ports,eh,eh ?

Whoever has the most $$ wins it looks to me..

USA government screwed up Social Security,TAXES,& has a BIG deficit....Oh yeah everything is just perfect here my arse....We will end up like Russia in the near future .China will probably be the next superpower ?
Our crazy politics, mainstream media, liberal vs republican, lawsuit happy, high fuel price way of life is depressing. Our auto manufacturers are sucking.Unions suck IMO.Schools are being infested with liberal rants in school classes- about how the goverment is awesome & capitolism is bad{thats just what i hear is going on}...etc.etc.etc.

A) Just what you hear? I don't think I have to go there.
B) I can't for the life of me figure out why a liberal would go on a pro-government rant right now. Bush is in the white house. Conservatives have majorities in both houses of congress. Bush just put two very conservative justices on the Supreme Court, thereby swinging the balance in a lot of tight cases...Yeah, I can see why liberals would be singing the praises of the government right now....

WTF?

Anyone else see something COMPLETELY RETARDED about this statement?

It's Bush's opponents (oddly enough, the same ones against racial profiling:think: ) that are fine with a British company doing this, but not with an Arab company. How the hell is that Bush's fault?

You are a real piece of work, man.

The ignorance of the American public is not Bush's fault. The steps that he has taken to paint an us vs. them dynamic are his fault. Where one stops and the other begins, I can't really say. I wouldn't go so far as to say that this particular case is all Bush's fault, but certainly his rhetoric only added fuel to the fire.

I dont think Bush has at all painted and us vs. them mentality with the arab countries, just with extremists, and that should be obvious to anyone who is paying attention. He has made it a point in nearly every speech to say that muslims are good people, they deserve freedom, etc. I find it hilarious that you guys are now bashing him for working more closely with an arab country. You bunch of freaking racists is what you are.

Yeah, and he also compared this to the Crusades. He's talked about how god (not allah) called him to defeat this evil. He's also linked a secularist Arab country (Iraq) to the extremists and attacked them, which would tend to confuse people and make them think that all Arabs are bad.

I'm sorry, did you just say what I think you just said? What alternate reality are you in? You just called me a racist for "bashing [Bush] for working more closely with an arab [sic] country." Um, when did I do that? Who is "you guys?" You don't have a leg to stand on right now, especially since you are responding to Chang's statement about the American public being racist for people NOT supporting this deal.

God y Allah = same thing. Im sure you know that tho. That some idiots got confused is not his fault.
I wasnt referring to you specifically for being racist as noted by the "bunch" in case you missed that. Unless it is that you refer to yourself as "bunch" for some reason. If you arent one bashing bush for working with an arab country, the statement doesnt apply. Sorry if unclear.

Well, if you consider that Allah and God are the same thing...and that he thinks god talks to him, well, I guess you have your answer.

In order for Bush to believe Allah is speaking to him he would have to believe in Islam. Otherwise it is Jehovah (assuming he is Christian).

I don't know, maybe it was the fact that you were answering my quote and saying "you guys" that gave me the idea that you were calling me racist.

I hope "you guys" includes all the Republicans who have the same fears about this deal as the other nebulous people in the "you guys" and "you bunch".

I see what you are saying in that semantically allah = god, but if you really think Bush is talking about allah and not the protestant Christian god, then we have to wonder, once again, what alternate reality you are living in.

It's just like when my catholic cousin told her father that she wanted to become a prostitute, he only calmed down when he found out that she hadn't actually said protestant...
