Hip Urban Casual Cycling Jacket?

So I need a riding jacket that matches my hip, urban lifestyle. It needs to say "I have taste, but not too much taste" and be at home at the trendy bars in the Mission or the Marina. It needs to be functional for the 50-60 degree range, have lots of pockets, and preferably some kind of venting on the arms or sides. It needs to be reasonably visible so cars don't plow into me while I'm descending Twin Peaks or riding through Golden Gate Park. It needs to be machine washable since I'll be sweating in it.

in college one year me and 2 of my housemates (2 other bike dirtbags like myself) couldn't find a 4th for our townhouse and got assigned a rando. he showed up in pretty much the thriller jacket. we thought he was OK despite being a total hipster. one night while having a party with the local BMX crew, he thought it'd be funny to break a bottle over someone's head. he got the shit kicked out of him. would have been a lot worse if my housemates hadn't intervened. i was out drinking elsewhere that night and i got back after the party cleared out and he was nursing 2 black eyes :rofl:

Well that is true from what I can remember, although most of my time there was spend on the water.

When it's potentially just slightly chilly (more like 40s to 50s though) I take a small packable jacket, usually not waterproof, but it takes up so little space that it's easy to deal with when you dont want it, like climbing. They ball up to around the size of your fist and can be compressed further. Anything more gets way way too hot and steamy IME.

Given the style of what you posted already, I wonder if you've thought of Patagucci or Icebreaker. They're in the same ball-park price range, but their sustainability ethos should earn you some extra hippy-credit... (that said, I have products from both of these companies, and their quality, durability, and attention to detail is outstanding. well worth the cash outlay IMO. but you better choose wisely, caus' you're going to be living with these pieces for a long time):

That Patagonia stuff always looks a little to...peasant-y to me for some reason. If I'm going to spend $200 on a fleece sweater essentially, it needs to look better than a $20 one I can buy at Target. And sometimes the Patagonia stuff looks worse.

The icebreaker stuff might be interesting though.

Cuts the wind, warm, but breathes really well. I seem to practically live in mine for many months of the year. Cool fall commutes into work are down a big hill in the morning and straight up the hill climbing home.

If Patagonia is too "pesanty", then maybe Arcteryx is more up your alley?! I have one of these: https://arcteryx.com/ca/en/shop/mens/atom-lt-jacket . I don't use it much, as I find it overengineered for most of my purposes. I also find it too "gear-y". But take it outsidoors in active conditions and it's the shit. It shone on a ski-touring outing in a complete white out on the top of Mount Marcy. Couldn't see shit, winds were so strong I could barely stay straight, the snow was wet and heavy. I threw this jacket on when we came above the tree line, and was astounded at how well it worked. I never overheated, but never felt cold or clammy.

But if you're after something that looks "urban", this ain't your thing. I like @junkyard's recommendation of a wool shirt. You can't go wrong with the classics. And there's a reason they are still used outdoors today.

Seriously! Go to the thrift store or a second hand spot and buy some goofy old jacket like a true hipster.
