Hitch-mount rack questions

Hopefully this is the right forum for this.

I'm looking for a hitch-mount rack that will hold the bike by its wheels. I've seen two so far, the Sportworks at REI that holds a bike by the front and rear wheel, and a Thule rack that holds the bike by its front wheel and BB.

If anyone knows the advantage of one of these systems over the other, or if it's a good idea at all since most racks I see hold the bike by the frame, please let me know.

Thanks,
John

I have the Sportworks rack, and I gotta say it's simply the best rack I have ever seen. It really makes loading the bike a simple task; it probably takes 15 seconds total, and involves no straps or anything.

It sounds like the Thule you're looking at is about as easy. I dunno, though, I've never seen it.

The only downsides to the Sportworks are 1) that you may need a bigger tire holder loop if you're using a DH bike (it'll fit up to a 2.7 on a narrower rim), and 2) price ($300).

Do a search on RM, there have been a couple of threads about the Sportworks and everybody who uses them raves about it.

Also, it's a big attention-getter. It seems like every time I'm at a race or trailhead, somebody comes up to me and asks about it. :D :thumb:

oh, one more thing - I weigh 200 lbs and I can get up on my bike while it's mounted on the rack, and bounce around. The rack doesn't flinch. How many other racks can you say that about?

I've had great luck with Hollywood Team Rack...they come in two bikes setup with an option for a four bike add-up.. Tire size is not going to be an issue...They have done a great job for me so far on the winding mountain roads to Snow Summit, CA....for those who know me, I drive pretty "mellow":D

I second the Hollywood Team Rider. I purchased one 2 years ago and have been extremly happy with it.

Something you will have to watch for on the Thule Rimroc (I think that's the one that holds the bikes by the rims) is it only works on a 2" hitch system, not on a 1 1/4" system that you often find on smaller cars.

Thanks everyone for your replies.

I checked out the hollywood site and I'll be getting one of those, mainly because I have the option to put a 3" tire on there if need be. I had never heard of Hollywood bike racks until I read those posts.

I hope it works for you...here's my friend's 4 bike setup Hollywood (we're still loading the 4th bike up)....

and you don't need 3.0 tires...at all:devil:
