Just heard on Fox News... first person in history to test negative for HIV after testing positive 14 months ago. Naturally occurring anti-bodies in this case may lead to a cure.... kewl...

consider the source fox isn't the most reliable, but it is possible, I would wait for an official medical report on it before getting anybody's hopes to far up there, that being said I give AIDS 7 more years tops before it is a thing of the past

Prudent of me to add that they are triple-checking the DNA on the tests to make sure there were no mistakes with the original diagnosis.

i´ve read that too on a yellow tabloid newspaper here. they quote "news of the world" as the original source.

i dont know much about them.. but they seem at least a bit fishy....
from their site

"Gay Andrew, from Largs, Ayrshire, caught the virus from his HIV-positive boyfriend Juan.
In May, 2002, worried that he was feeling tired, weak and feverish, he had three blood tests at the Victoria Clinic for Sexual Health in west London, which specialises in HIV.

At first they were all negative — but Andrew was told the virus takes three months to show up in the blood after contraction.

And when he returned for more tests in August, this time they found HIV anti-bodies that proved it was lurking in his body. "

it's been known for quite a while that some people have the genetics to fight HIV a bit better than the general populace. these people are rare.

google CCR5 if you're interested.

anyway, i guess i forgot the point in there :D which is that these individuals' lower susceptibility doesn't really have any bearing on a "cure for HIV" for joe sixpack.

Toshi, I saw a TV program a few years ago that was linking modern people who are immune or resistant to HIV back to their ancestors who also whadda ya know, happened to be immune to the plague. Any more info on that you know of? Seems as though there are some pretty tough genes floating around out there.

What is so interesting is this gentleman doesn't have the CD8 T-cells that have been found to offer immunity to HIV. Supposedly he contracted the disease and his immune system has developed the ability to fight it. I got my info from the BBC. My brothers and I have been found to have the CD8 T-cells which seemingly have protected us even though many around us have fallen to the disease. We participated in a study about 12 years ago where they attempted to isolate or explain our immunity in an effort to develope a cure. The study ended when my fathers family wouldn't participate.

There's been a cure for HIV for 10+ years now.....just look at Magic Johnson (HA)......It's only a matter of time until this thread takes a turn down conspiracy theory lane.

LOL!!!

Seriously though, a cure for or progress toward a cure for any disease of this magnitude would be cause for celebration!
Yea... just think about it... you could celebrate by having unprotected sex with an intravenous drug user! Hooray!!!

I can't remember the source, and I will make no claim as to its accuracy, but I remember hearing at one point that there is a large portion of europeans that have very high resistence if not immunity to HIV because of anti-bodies developed as a result of the plague.

Wasn't the plague a bacterial infection? How would that create ant-bodies for a virus?

No idea. The story claimed that there are large chunks of the population in certain areas that have extremely high resistence to HIV...I'm pretty sure it said it was something to do with the plague...or so their theory went.

There are a lot of people who get HIV, without using drugs or having loose wild sex. The spouses of adulterers, blood transfusions, accidental needle sticks, Children born to someone who has HIV.
