Here is a question on trail gearing:

I run 32/22 x 11-32 cass currently.

I'm trying to simplify and lighten my trail rig.

Been thinking of going:

a) 30T x 11-34 cass

b) 32T x 11-34

The Questions:

1) What do you think of running single ring on trails ? Especially w/ a 11-34 ?

2) Will there be much of a difference/benefit running 32 vs 30 ?

Why ask:

It seems to me I run 32x32 most of the time. Except when I need speed or on huge climbs (uncomfortable in 32x32 occasionally)

So, I'm hoping 32 or 30 single ring front x 11-34 can eliminate my need for a front shifter, derail, and granny ring.

I've run a 32 by 12x34 for a couple years. A 32x32 was a bit much plus I like the gaps(gear selection) on the 34 better. We don't have any extended climbing in these parts -- maybe a 1/2 mile. Just short steep stuff.

You will still have to keep your derailer or something similar(rollers, double bash guards, n-stop/bash) to keep the chain from jumping off.

Cool.

I think a single ring and the wider range cassette will do it.

Now I jus have to find a good 30T ring to try out.

I've done 34x11-34 and it was alright...I seriously prefer my 36/22x11-30, though, mated with a DRS guide. The single ring is great for most rides, but when you've been on the trail for a while, being able to drop to the granny can save your ride from misery.

And I find it most useful when the climbs get technical and you just don't have any momentum. That's where my single-ring setup really, really let me down.

BMXman, let's go climb Noble or Anderson on the Geminis and then you can tell me how great the 36x11-34 combo is... :p
