Ever since I've dated my GF she's had some pretty severe breathing problems. Also since I've dated my GF she's only had health insurance for a month or 2 at the begining.

Well she's gotten a full time teaching position and here health insurance has only just kicked in at the begining of the month. The first thing she did was to get a referal to see a specialist. 2 weeks ago she went to the specialist and had some tests done. Today she got the results.

She has moderate to severe lung disease due to second had smoking from her mom.

damn, that's sucky news - so what does she have to do? medication? exercise? diet?
Medication is the first thing and that will be for the rest of her life. Right now she's gotta take something like 5 different medications. I guess after a certain length of time it will be scaled back to 1 but that will be for the rest of her life.

Sorry to hear that Stosh. Sucks that an innocent bystander gets sick from someone elses bad habit :(
Yeah well her mom's smoking has become a major problem and now it's an even bigger problem.

She has a love hate relationship with her mom so I'm just gonna have to wait and see what happens.

Another slap in the face to the self-righteous smokers who claim, "I'm not hurting anyone else, why should you care?"

I saw a woman outside the laundry place a couple weeks ago who was sitting in a car with all the windows closed (it was cold out), smoking a cigarette, with a little 1 or 2 year old kid in front passenger seat. The car was practically foggy.

Sorry to hear it, Stosh, hope everything turns out okay. Keep up the riding - my buddy has fairly severe asthma, and his lungs have gotten progressively better every year since he started riding every day!

Yeah it does suck. I'm so glad I quit smoking when I did a few years back.

 Cigarettes are harmful?

So what can they do for her?

Don't know what they can do yet. She's on medication and we'll probably go for a second opinion.

I'm totally surprized something hasn't been created to "fix" a person's lungs from smoking.
Why to allow people to smoke more?

I heard Phillip Morris is working on it as we speak. :)

wow too bad, from second hand smoke? How is the mother still alive from all those cigarets.
makes ya wonder.

My GF almost died when she was like 3. Apparently she developed a hole in her lung. I think ever since then her lungs have been weak. Thus there is more of a chance for her to contract things like this.

Sorry to hear Stosh. Are any of your turkey day house guests smokers?
about 1/2 of the people staying at our Apt. smoke. They would not have been allowed to smoke in our house anyway.

That sucks, man. :(

At least there is a reason for her breathing problems, instead of getting the "we can't find anything" from the doctors. Now that they have identified a problem, she can actually get some treatment.

yeah I agree and thats what I told her. I said atleast now we can fix it and work making sure it doesn't progress (That was my hint for getting her out to bike more)

That sucks big time. :( It really does blow...

The best decision my wife and I ever made was to quit. It'll be 2 years on Dec 1. Cold turkey. It can be done.

Her mom is selfish. She won't go to the DR even when she's really sick because she doesn't want to hear the DR tell her to quit smoking.

Stosh, just read the post. All i can say is that really sucks and best wishes to you and your GF. It sounds like she has a great guy by her side to help her get through this.....
Ha, yeah well I'm ok. She'll be fine but I think she's just really upset with her mom. Plus now it gives us an excuse not to have my cousin's dogs at our apt.

I think that riding is the best thing possible to aid healing, nothing better than lots of fresh air and blood pumping to the area to clean it out. Good luck to her man!

So....

What's going to be the next Mother's Day present? Maybe a carton of Nicorette gum and a punch in the face?

Thanks Mom! :dead:

Good luck man. Glad I quit, (almost 8 years ago) I hope my mom does some day.

Sucks Stosh. I am amazed that they make me wear a seat belt for safety reasons, but will sell me cigarettes. I hate tobacco companies and the bitches in government that let them flourish. :dead:
