i cant take credit for this idea, i found it on a site, but it works pretty well.

supplies:
- 2'x2' plywood (the original instructions called for for particle board, i just happened to have a piece of plywood that was 2x2)
- 5' 1"dia galvanized pipe
- 18" 3/4"dia galvanized pipe
- 3/4" -1" reducing elbow
- 1" Flange
- 2 pieces of 2x4 cut at 6.5 inches
- 3/4" pipe clamp

here's the finished product

first: cut a hole horizontally through both pieces to fit the pip through, and then another vertically for the seatpost

second: screw the pipe clamp to the 2x4's and thread it to the 3/4" pipe

third: cut 4 counter bores on the bottom corner of the plywood so the bolts don't stick out

fourth: mount the flange to the plywood and then the 1" pipe to the flange

then just attach the 3/4" pipe to the 1" pipe and your good

i would suggest taking old tubes and mounting them on the hole for where you put the seat post for protection...right now i've just got an old t-shirt on there...also it tends to bend forward quite a bit when you put a bike on there...so a weight by the base would be good...maybe a cinder block or something...right now i've got old mountain bike action mags on there...i guess they're good for something

but here's a couple more pics with bikes

I miss college when I had time to do stuff like that. Now, with a wife, baby and job, you have to calculate the number of hours it takes to make that thing. Usually it's cheaper just to work and buy the stuff, but that is a great stand and good use of creativity.

I like how you created a channel in the wood to hold the seat post.

That is quite possibly more functional and higher quality construction than all of the consumer stands on the market.

If you could figure out a way to make it swivel, I'd replace my park stand with that.

It seems like the wood base needs to be bigger. Hows the size? Have you tried anything like tightening a BB yet?

it's a bit taller than most stands...but i don't mind it

and i havn't done much on it yet...when i have some free time, i'm gonna strip down both my bikes and give them a good cleaning and greasing...so i'll let you know how that goes...but that may be a while

Good job on the stand but do you have any idea how much it cost you? Just roughly adding everything up in my head I can't imagine it cost you less than $100 + labor why not just get a cheapy or used stand?

PS. Great idea though!

Nice work. Did you ever get that chain/guide/whatever problem sorted out on the Chase?

I see Stosh's point... the clamp itself probably costs $30, no? My thought is that he probably had some stuff laying around and just needed to buy a few things here and there to complete it, and ended up spending $30 on the stuff he didn't have. Perhaps he had the clamp and the lumber, had to buy the pipe/shaft/whatever that is and some screws/bolts...

Regardless, it's a sweet stand, especially for a DIY jobber. :thumb:

DNA: Yeah i finally got everything on that bike working like a charm...i fixed that weird sound it was making and my chain drop problem

Looked at those pics again- You are a brave man working so close to that nice computer on the floor. That stand might cost more that you think if something takes that sucker out.

Very cool, nice job. The only concern I have is whether the plywood base is strong enough, seems you'd rip the stand right out with some high-torque moves.

yeah, that has been kind of a concern to me, i'm gonna pick up a cinder block this weekend while i'm at my parents house and put it on the base, to see if that helps
