Hi i'm building a pair of wheels for my Tandem ussing 36 holes Hope Big'un hubs and some burly trail pimp rims my spoke calculator data does not cover the dimensions on this items so i was wondering if somebody know the lenght of the spokes, i'm quessing they must be about 250MM/252Mm but i'm not sure , anyway will be great if somebody can save me the trouble and the risk of measuring the hubs wrong plus i still don't have the hubs in my posesion.

from what i understand you can only do a TWO cross pattern on the Big'un hubs oviuslly for a mountain tandem i will love to use a 3 cross,,hell even a Four cross will be great but i'm sure do to the tall flange and the eyelet shape & orientation that is a absolute impossibility..

anyway any advice will be welcome,I plan to use triple butted DT spokes (13/15/14) that hopefully comes in the measurement i need..

on a side note if anybody in the bayarea feel like riding trails (easy stuff I quess) on a 20" by 16" Ibis mountain tandem( front shock hardtail rear end) they are more than welcome,,i can tell you that is a ton of fun and for sure more of a challenge to steer than many long wheel base Dh bikes, not to mension Popping wheellies and bunnyhops is extremlly difficult if not almost impossible specially for the wheellies,,

thanks again for the help in advance

You can do a 3 cross with the Big Un.
Thanks Brian that will only make for a stronger wheel..

So can i call my self "Hope fan number Dos"...!?!?

I still have a few of the things they made on the late 80" (or early 90' i guess) and they still work like day one, plus this C4 Brakes they make are the "Cats pillamas", actually soon they will be put to the ultimate test being use for tandem dutty (with a redundant set of Scotts self-energize cantilever brakes in the back)

thanks again for the advice, maybe someday i buy your spare wheels also (if you want to sell them that is)

i have the Hubs and the rims already,,now i only need the silly spokes,,

I'm pretty sure somebody knows the asnwers or at least a good place to look for the answer..

I have no access to the Dt or wheelsmith "On-line" spoke calculators and i'm sure the answer is right there..

please don't make me do this the hard way

thanks

The best wheelbuilder I know doesn't even use a calculator, but a very old chart from DT. He also built his own measuring device for axle and flange spacing.

BTW, Hope has their own spoke calculator: http://www.hopetech.com/technical/technical_index.htm. If you can find the ERD for your rims, you are almost there.

And even though I use Bike-A-Log's spoke calculator, I still check all the dimensions, just in case.

And I doubt the answer is "right there".

246mm

THE ERD at the atomlabs website is 522, plug that into the DT swiss spoke calculator . That'll do it. I get 246mm using 3 cross for the bigun 20mm front hub.
