I have a hard time building wheels with DT Competition spokes (15G), because the holes are so small. And I have a customer that wants me to make a a wheelset with one of the new bladed spokes from DT, or even the Sapim XRay's.

Anyone try the bladed with Hope Bulbs?

Seems the spoke holes on these hubs are pretty small.

I just looked at a spoke box and they were the Competition 14g 2.0/1.8. And I have built about 3 sets of wheels with these spokes, and they are a real pain to get the last set of spokes in because they are so tight.

Definalty a lot of cursing involved.

My guess its the spoke then, come to think about it I recently built a set of CK wheels with Comp spokes and it was a battle to get them to seat properly, the Wheelsmith seem to fit right in without a fight. Weird though cause the Bulbs have always seem to cooperate more when lacing even with DT's.

DT's website says that the Aero's are 2.3 wide on the bladed part, so it probably won't work.

And I know with the XRays you usually have to file out a larger hole.

But Wheelsmith spokes aren't as cool as DT!

Actually I really like Wheelsmith spokes, I find both to hold up equally as well. DT offers fancier selections of spokes, but as for straight and double butted they both hold up with any issues.

I agree with you on Wheelsmith. They hold up for me and all the wheels i've built, and are about half the price as well.

But it seems a lot of people gotta have DT. I guess they go to they're website and believe all the marketing BS. I have come to the conclusion that both manufacturers spokes are as good as the other.

Hm, sounds like time for a dremel and a very narrow bit...just barely touch the insides of the flange holes...

I definatly wouldn't be comfortable with that. But if the customer wanted to do it himself, more power to him.

Agree.. gotta be the spokes. I built up several wheels with Hope Bulb hubs and 14g spokes.. no problem whatsoever. Last set that I built for myself is in its 3rd season now with no retentioning!! :D

Why go that route, I'm sure there's a drill bit that's just the right size, hold it with a hand chuck or a tapping handle and go to town. It's only aluminum and you're only taking off a couple thousandths, you should be able to resize 32 holes in about 5 minutes.
