Can't figure what to go with. I have 8" hayes hfx 9's now and can't stand them. What are some feelings on or experiences with the above mentioned brakes?

Go for the hopes.

The Avids have some flaws and havent been around long enough to get them worked out.
Magura disc brakes generally just suck so I'd stay away from them.

These are my favorites:
Hydro - Hayes Mag, Hope
Mech - Avid

Your face.
I beg to differ on the Magura front.

We got in a test set of brakes, and other then the moto-style levers (they were huge) the brakes were really impressive. Great power, great modulation, and in general, almost no problems at all.

Beleive me, after all hte stuff i've heard, i was surprised too. ;)

I heard that Hope solved the shreaking problem for 05 by including ear plugs with the brakes. Anyone else hear that?
What'd you say? You're gonna have to speak up, I can't hear you cuz I have to wear earplugs when I ride my bike with Hope brakes. :p

But seriously folks...

Don't go for Maguras, just because, well, they're Maguras. Avids have an extremely grabby feel to them. And Hopes just flat-out dominate all other brakes. I'm loving my (relatively) new M4s.

I have had shimano's for a little over a year and no regrets. Plenty of power...no fade no upkeep. I bled them, i put them on, and ive replaced a set of pads. you can Keep your over priced brakes. Yuppie. ;)

1) They ain't overpriced when you work at a bike shop.

2) Check the definition of "yuppie", then get back to me. Damn young'un.

I used to run hope m4's but now i'm a converted juicy user. The avids are much better in terms of power than the m4's ever were and i've crashed tons on the avids. Had no real problems.

You don't need new brakes. You need to buy Mag levers for your Hayes, a substantially lower cost than getting a whole new system.

Good call. I've ran my Mags without ANY problems for the past six months or so.

I'd like to try some Hopes for a longer period of time though...

The common sense solution ehh ;)
Mag levers should solve all the problems for less dough and you'll save money on earplugs.

so how do you keep the hayes calipers from freezing up? So far I have had 2 different calipers freeze up, one pad stops moving. Tried bleeding them nothing, rebuilt one caliper still nothing. Had lbs try it and still nothing. sent it back to hayes, still waiting on a verdict. both of these froze up in one season of moderate dh(10 days and 15 days on the mountian. Tried a mag lever and still nothing. plus I hate the on or off feel of the hayes no middle ground

That means you have pumped too much fluid into the system creating too much pressure. If you don't pressurize it and have it bled correctly, there is a ton of modulation while still locking up if you really grab er

got brake back from Hayes they bled it and replaced the pistons and still one side sticks and the other side leaks around the piston. i have come to the conclusion that Hayes just plain suck. I was going to try the mag levers but I have had it. Time to start looking for something new.

I've run Shimano, Hayes, Magura and Hopes. Haven't had a chance to try the Avids yet.
My personal opinion:
Shimano XT- decent power and modulation, no sex appeal though
Hayes Mag - more of an on/off feel, good power. easy to find parts.
Magura Gustavs - best combination of feel and power. lever blades on older models feel flimsy. probably the heaviest of the bunch. best damn customer service.
Hope Mini - super sexy looking. feel not quiet as nice as the Maguras. Annoying squeal.

okay can we take your word for this cause these brakes seem to get mixed views. does anyone have a good review of these things cause im trying to deside between the m4s or the gustavs. i want someone who has had trail experiance with both the brakes.

Allow me to re-pitch this for you:

"SBLF (single barely-literate freerider) seeking experienced tutor with European sophistication and big calipers. Knowledge of English and German a must. Teach me what I don't know, and I promise to be a good student."

well i've been running 02 version for just over a year now.
I to was in this situation a couple of years ago, i was trying to choose between hopes and gustavs when i was specing my current ride, i heard plenty of praise and some horrer stories, but in the end i decided to just go for them, i havnt looked back since, i have been extremly impressed by there amazing performance, power and modulation are superior to anything else i have tryed.
lever feel and over all feel is very different from any other brakes but after a few rides you grow to love it, gives you a great feeling of control and confidence.
relyablity is superb, only had to replace a hose since i got them(but i'll blame that on the tree), dispite all the horroer stories i've not had any trouble with the seals or levers.
and customer service is top notch.

i say the only negative things about these brakes is the weight, maybe the price and if you have hubs with a funny bolt pattern for example a hope bigun then you will most likely have to get a custom made disc, oh and spares are a bit expensive.

i have the juicy 7s love the feel and stopping power of them, they are much better then the crappy hayes i use to have
I agree 100%. My hayes were constant problems. They either squeeled like a pig or I had to use four fingers to stop. And yes I know how to properly maintain my brakes. My avids are silent and stop on a dime with one finger.

Get the Gustav's, i would say that they are hands down the best DH brakes on the market. I have been running them for the last 2 years and have changed a lot of peoples minds on how good the brakes are. Pretty much everyone who has ridden my bike notices how good the brakes are and many of them have already switched to the gustav's on their own rig. I was forced to ride my spare bike for DH a few times, it has hayes mag's and the first thing i noticed was how bad the brakes felt compared to maguras.

I juste switched from Hope to Magura Gustav's cause I couldn't stand the sound of the Hopes.

The Maguras work great, not too on-off, very good braking, NO NOISE.

Bottom line: Best brake ever. Buy them!

Thats weird, my M6's don't make any noise. They did originally with the sinthered pads but replaced them with the organtic pads and had no issues with them.
and Brian would know since they are ALWAYS on!
