Right!... I was in France about 2 weeks back (les gets) and have the most annoying rear M4 in the world! Basically first run down my back brake made me sound like a large bus, making a deep hum and even vibrating the bike! When it did this the brake also slightly lost power, it did it no matter how warm or cold it was and happened every time I pulled the lever, even at the very start of a run!
So I went to the ride-on guys in les gets, where we:
- Cleaned with disk brake cleaner
- cycled the pistons so they bite even
- faced the mounts
- shimmed perfectly
- checked all bolts and rotor bolts
- put silicon(sp?) behind the pads
- check rear end of frame for play and tightened up etc

....yet the noise remained! So we

- put new pads in.

However just 2 days later my disk suddenly snapped mid-run (see photo at bottom). It must have been a faulty disk then...right?!!

- bought new disk

WRONG! >:( my second to last day riding the new disk (just 5 days old) snapped in exactly the same way as the first one, identical!! So it can't be the rotor.

Now in both cases the Q/R wheel was tight, rotor bolts loctited, not dragging the back brake too much, both disks perfectly true, not that far into the run, I weigh about 10.5 stone so it’s not my weight!

I therefore rang hope a few minutes back explaining the problem and if they could maybe take a look at the rotor and the brakes, they said the rotors can be warranted (which I was expecting) but that there cannot be any problem with the disk and there’s no point in sending them the brake to test as they wont have the bike to test it on. So basically they said it’s not setup right... when infact it couldn't be set up any more perfect! And refusing to look at the calliper as it will not have a problem. I was polite on the phone yet the guy was slightly off hand when I suggested maybe there is a problem with the calliper, not the excellent hope service I've been told about, they could at least have offered to look at the pistons n seals, i'd pay for that - so i have piece of mind that it is perfect and it must be some other mysterious part!

So what could the problem be!?
no one I know has ever seen it before, neither has Andy at ride-on or the few mechanics I have spoken to, having spent around £70 on the brake on top of buying it 6 months back I'm very tempted to just cut my losses and get something else! Someone help !!!!

Cheers - Jon (UK)

(sorry for the essay!)

That is bizzare. By right direction you mean clockwise as per the photo? Hard to see how running it the other way would cause a problem though. All I can think of is that the caliper is not square with the disc and as the brake is applied it bends the rotor and over time the flex, concentrated at or near the bolts fatigues the rotor until it breaks. But geez it's have to be out by a lot I would think for that to happen and I would think that it would be very obvious or that there would be other issues.
