I don't think Moore actually qualifies as ultra-liberal. He's in his own world.

You don't have to have political issues with Moore before you realize that it's his manipulative, exploitative filmmaking and elastic sense of reality that are the real problem, not politics.

so what, exactly, is the difference between a socialist (moore) and an ultra-liberal? no punchline, a genuine curiosity, rather.

Political leanings are multi dimensional, socialism is mainly an economic ideology. Someone could be socially liberal and economically moderate/conservative. Describing people as just lefty or righty is so N8.

so once a hippie's "music" gets widely recognized, they're then ultra-liberal?

coverage and quality are two different issues, bucko :busted:

and i, for one, would like to see a study on how many "poor" people have cell phones, snazzy cars, big tvs, all manner of material goods (downhill bikes, anyone?) yet say they can't afford to send their kids to a private school or pay for health care.

i'm not making the case that the current system is ideal, but i have a feeling a lot of the problem is that peoples' priorities are horribly skewed. if you don't learn from the multitude of stories out there about people stuck with huge hospital bills after wrecking with no insurance (see RhinofromWA a few years back) then what will teach you?

There is a girl in my anatomy class, a real genius and future nurse Im sure, who today was complaining about some ailment and how she couldnt afford to go to the doctors office because she didnt have health insurance. Of course, she was all decked out in the latest fashions...abercrombie, etc. and a face full of makeup, always on her cell phone...people are just dumb.
Right after I got out of the Marines, I made the mistake of not immediately getting my own coverage. I had alot going on, was moving, starting school and had planned to get it done at the end of the month. Wouldnt you know I got freaking mono out of nowhere? Well, one night I got really sick, went to the ER and was diagnosed with strep throat. I payed out the nose for the visit, drugs etc...but turns out I was misdiagnosed. The antibiotics and pain pills they gave me seemed to help for a bout a week or so...but then one night 103 fever, hurting bad...had to go back to the ER and get more tests and then they decided it was mono. Had to pay for that visit, more drugs.....Im actually lucky my spleen didnt burst because I was riding alot at the time and if Id crashed with it swollen like it was...Id still be paying for it all.
Definitely learned my lesson. Insurance comes before food for me. :busted:

I've told this story before but...

After 9/11 when Boeing kicked me out, I was unemployed for about 9 or 10 mos. (God thatwas awesome). anyway, for most of that time, my wife was finishing her degree and like I said, I was jobless....ergo my insurance was no more. But my wife being the resourceful one that she is had found that (at the time), WA state had what they called "Basic Health" coverage. You had to be pretty much destitute to qualify for it. (and we had only my unemployment insurance as reportable income), so we qualified.

So for $46/month, we were both covered. And the coverage had no pre-existing condition exceptions, and essentially was as good as any HMO. You just had to operate within their network (which again isn't much different than any other HMO.

I'm not sure what the rules are today....and I guess it will vary from state to state, but in WA, there's no reason for people to go without insurance.

Another lesson worth learning from that is to rest as much as possible when you're ill. Bear in mind that anything more than mild exercise depresses the immune system.

Health insurance is nearly as bad as car insurance. It's all a huge scam that you have to buy into or you're screwed.

I've been lucky the past few years to have a solid coverage plan that promotes alternative treatments. My wife sees an acupuncturists twice a month and I go to the chiropractor regularly.

Without insurance, you are screwed, but I also don't want to leave it in the hands of the gubment either.

Not in this country, anyways. Grover Norquist's starve the beast theory coupled with Bush style cronyism may not be a good thing in the long run.

Having said that, at least you can vote out the guys who run healthcare in every other civilized country. That isn't an option here...
