btw, I'm not trolling.

I'm wondering why he isn't alive today?

Crucified, died, rose, then, uhh, what?

Huh....ya know what, I just realized I've never read more than 2 pages of any religious text...

In all honesty, that strikes me as rather odd. I mean, I'm not going to go out and start reading all of em anytime soon (or ever)...but I just realized that right now...

Wierd part is: I'm more enlightened than quite a few bible thumping zealots I know....

Oh yeah...Define die.

According to the Christian faith, he's not dead, he ascended into heaven. "50 Then he led them out as far as Bethany, and, lifting up his hands, he blessed them. 51 While he was blessing them, he withdrew from them and was carried up into heaven. 52 And they worshiped him, and returned to Jerusalem with great joy; and they were continually in the temple blessing God" (Luke 24:50-52, NRSV). :nerd: I could probably go a little further into how this affects Christian thinking, but I doubt you're interested.

Then He returns again... for good. He came once to die for sins as the servant, because the second time He comes as the judge.
He makes that clear and what His plans are and what will happen, but weather or not people follow it is on them.
"He who is ashamed of me on earth, I will be ashamed of them on judgment day"

As far as all the judgment stuff, think of Him as your defense witness.

Enlighten me.
Ok, story time.

We'll call this guy "Bob". Bob's was an acquaintance of mine for several years. One day Bob calls me up and asks me if I'd like to go to this festival with him...apparently it's a music/art festival of some sort. It's my own damn fault for not reseaching it, BUT! I figure since I've known Bob for a bit, there won't be anything too fishy about this, and I'm an equal opportunity music lover. So, I figure what the hell... So, Bob swings by, picks me up, and we're off. On the way there, alarm bells start going off in my head during the conversation. "Do you go to church?" "Have you ever had a religious dream?" (Yes...I remembered having a very religious experience with Alyssa Milano once.....fwiw, that was the wrong answer to give to Bob...)

So this line of questioning continues while I make the decision in my head that I'm never hanging out with Bob alone again. So we get to this festival of arts and muzak. Turns out to be a evangelical christian concertina of sorts. Now, I can pick out good guitar riffs, and excellent bass lines anywhere. They were not here, so I thought that that was kind of a rip. Next, since I didn't dress like everyone else there (Bob never warned me that there was a dress code...) that that meant that I was there to be "saved". I had people asking me if I had thought of Jesus' feelings before piercing my ears...The answer was no. But I had prayed for divine intervention when I had my d*ck pierced. That ended the conversations pretty quickly...

So fast forward 2 hours, Bob's still trying to "sell" me on the whole christian thing and how I've been living "wrong". He actually asked me why I have gay friends when they're not really people. At this point, I said either we leave now and I never see him again or no one will ever find his left ear. The whole car ride home, Bob was pleading with me not to tell any of our mutual friends about his views and how he knew he could trust me...blah blah blah.

That's how I know I'm more enlightened than some religious zealots I know. I don't go around trying to tell everyone I know that they're lifestyle is wrong and they need to conform to A, B, and/or C.

if you ever talk to him again, tell "bob" you know a christian conservative who says he's a tool of satan.

seriously, i can't stand my "peeps" who use their faith to try to get another patch for their sash.

When I was a kid I got invited by a friends family to go water skiing at their cabin for the weekend. It was more like an hour of water skiing and 43 hours of proselytizing. F'in sucked.

Yeah...last I heard he was in Central or South America...(watch out Alexis!!)

next time, say "sure. now can we go skiing?" if they don't buy that, talk to them about ramtha. (make sure to use welsh accent for maximal persuasion)

Fair enough.
This actually makes me think of an incident not too long ago. I was riding with iridebikes to exit 38. Searching for a topic of conversation, I stumbled onto the topic of beliefs, purely for interest's sake...I have no interest in converting people through persuasion. Being a theology major, and wanting to study ancient Eurasian religious history in grad school, thinking about beliefs (specifically how they affect society) is what I do. It only took me a second to realize how horrible of a topic it was. While our discussion on the topic was fine, it reminded me of how hard it is discuss beliefs, especially to press them on others. Yet as $tinkle pointed out, some people believe that it is their duty to do so. What's worse is that they take theologically irrelevant topics (i.e. homosexuality) and force them as a matter of life or death.
