How distorted/censored/spun is American news?

To what degree is the average political news broadcast changed for American audiences? For example I have never, ever seen or heard in any way shape of form Iraqi or Afghani casualty reports on any American news broadcast.

If those things are being kept from the average American, what else is left out or distorted I wonder...

For the most part the news media is an extension of the entertainment industry. They report what sells or gets the ratings. Since reporting about American "Idle" is easier and will bring more of an audience the real and possibly important news rarely gets reported. And who cares about Iraqi casualties who is J-lo dating this week?

A few minutes in front of any other country's news programming will tell you "terribly!".

It's curious to what extent the whole 24hr news format has further contributed to the "news as entertainment" problem.

I've said this befroe.

When trying to get the "locals'" perspective on things, on US media you have four american guys in suits pointing at a map telling you "how it is".

On CBC, they have reporters actually in the streets of Bahgdad, Kabul etc... actually speaking with actual citizens (through interpreters). And I promise you, it paints a very different picture than what I see on CNN or Fox.

Man, did you see the dateline on the Apprentice, that was awesome! And the 48 hours on survivor was good 2. I think we need a news channel dedicated to reality TV. (come to think of it thats probly a million dollar idea right there)

People are lazy.

It's too much work for me to turn to channel 29 for the CBC channel.

I have gievn up and just read N8's reports for all my information.

I'll likely vote for Bush now.

I watched a video about 2 weeks ago called "Spin" that was pieced together from over 500 hours of live satelite feeds- basicly feeds that ran during the commercial, before and after the interview..... All during the '92 Pres election. I was blown away to the extent that the interviews were rehearsed. Too much to go into, but they were as scripted as any TV show I have seen.

Do you think you get a more unbiased media elsewhere? I would love to see a single periodical that is unslanted in some direction or the other.
Yes I do. CBC is my standard for these debates. Canadian news is far less concerned with image and eye candy. Peter Mansbridge (the CBC's equivalent to Tom Brokaw)...is BALD...and they let him on TV!!

The employ reporters with accents...again...they let them speak ON CAMERA!!

They don't have the little Fox News tartlets.

I firmly believe CBC is far more interested in delivering as accurate a portrayal as possible of what's going on in the world.

BBC is better too.

I get more info about the world in the 2nd intermission of a hockey game (I have Directv, so I get the Hockey Night in Canada sometimes) from CBC than I do in an hour's newscast in California.
