How do I get the thing out of the thing?

Slide hammer would be the best but I think you like other options…. What about making something like a Shimano pressfit bb extractor?
Thanks, we'll see what happens. It's on the truck in amazonland.
Bearing pullers with a slide hammer are so fuckin awesome when you already have one and you need it. The only problem is you rarely need it.

For some stuff like Hope hubs it really seems like they are intended to be tapped out with punches, not bearing pullers.

But for other stuff, having the bearing puller on hand is super nice.

Shit, I found my post, it was my hub, not my BB:

The bearing had disintigrated, race was stuck in the hub, you can see this in the last two pictures, pulled the cage and free ball bearings out, used the blind bearing puller to get the race out. Damn glad I had that tool.

I got one of these. There are cheaper, and if I intended on keeping it forever I would probably have picked a cheaper one. All of these things on amazon are the same shit just in a different box with a different "brand"...so why spend $10 more for "orion" vs. "mpow" or "BTSHub" or "Alltooetools". I need a 35mm collet that can expand to 38ish mm. Some of the cheaper kits don't have them, they stop at 32mm.

Have you tried magnets yet?
kind of.

I have an induction stove. I figured I could heat up the steel race and that might just drop the thing out (plus maybe the vibrations???). It didn't work, there wasn't enough mass to engage the element.

I may try heating to 150*C/300F in the toaster oven later though. We'll see.

Umm, if you managed to heat the steel race, wouldn't it expand in place, making its extraction harder?

Edit: sniped by JBP.

Yes, but it should transfer the heat to the surrounding aluminum which would expand faster at the same temperature. It also may free the corrosion, as many times heat can chase oil into places it won't work into by itself.

Regardless, I wanted to try it and I can't do anything until either the dremel or bearing puller gets here. Right now the frame is just chilling, waiting for me to pick a color and letting the pblaster soak

Given the melting point of steel is ~2500F, heat the frame gently to ~1250F and you should then be able to remove the steel race from the puddle of aluminium.

Then you'll just need to form the molten alu back into tubesets and tig back into a frame.

*you'll have to heat treat the frame afterwards

a little jewlers saw would be fine to cut that race.
but how the heck you not already have a dremel?

K well cutting with the dremel was more challenging than I expected as I do not want to cut the head tube. There isn’t much clearance between the aluminum thing and the race. Tomorrow the mustard plug arrives and I’ll try that thing.

I think I’m going to powder coat it and the frame will be sandblasted prior. I’ll probably take a little Emory cloth or fine grit sandpaper to it before then.

Tread lightly, There aren't too many critical dimensions on a bike, but that is one of them.
