Click on a user, and you'll see their member card. Click Start a Conversation.

Alternately, click on your little envelope in the nav bar. Click Start a New Conversation.

Alternately alternately, click on your username, click Conversations to see your inbox, then click the Start a New Conversation button.

other than that. i cannot find the 'start a conversation' button..

Click a user's username anywhere you see it and you should get a popup card:

Click your username in the upper right and select Conversations, and you should see the conversations list with a blue button:

If either of those don't appear for you, let me know because they should both be there.
