There are lots of free/demo programs to help you. I've used Ulead's gif animator and it works great. You can (or at least, you used to be able to) download the demo at downloads.com.
Basically it works like flip-book animation. You give a gif animator a bunch of images... the animator creates a single image that cycles through the sequence of images very quickly.

cool thanks everyone, i've always wanted to make a stupid flip book avatar but just never knew how to do it. 
The hardest part is getting it to work with the file size limits on RM.
