How is a "debate" a debate if...

...the participants aren't allowed to address each other?

Granted I only caught he very end of a news clip on TV. But they were talking about the rules of the presidential debate. Among them was the fact that they are not allowed to address each other. How the hell is that a debate? Isn't that then just two people giving prepared speeches next to each other?

Defeats the purpose, doesn't it?

When we debated at school, so many years ago, that's pretty much how it worked. Two speakers would address the audience and then the audience would vote.

Of course since the advent of electricity things may have moved on a bit.

These debates are stupid. I'd would be just as relavant if both candidates just sat on the steps in front of congress playing the dozens.

Bush's mom is so ugly when she wrote a book they had to put a picture of her dog on the slip cover instead of hers.

Kerrys momma is so fat she has to see the issues from both sides.

Thank you, thank you, I'll be playing Matts Lounge in Sheboygan tomorrow, don't forget to tip your waitresses.

And exactly what happens if one of the candidates breaks a rule? Is one going to sue the other or something? How great would it be if it got heated??

It's not really a debate, but just a two sided partisan wankfest. I am sure most real issues wil be glossed over. Dubya will parrot how safe we are now that Saddam is behind bars. Osama Bin Forgotten will receive nary a mention. Kerry will spout off about his purple hearts, and probably ramble on about vietnam in general. Either that or both sides will just attack each others character.

Actually, I wasn't as disappointed as I thought I'd be. They could respond and rebut, if not address one another directly. It was still a repetitious sound-byte fest, but the format wasn't as restrictive as I'd expected.
