Depends what stem it is, if you stem is very tall you might be able to swap it for a very short one. How much steerer is there sticking out above the headset?

Don't ride it as it is.

There is about an 1.5 inches above the headset.

I'm looking into a lower profile double bolt head set to see if that might work. the stem I currently have stands [correction] just over two inches high.

Thanks for all of your help and suggestions.

1.5 inches out of the top of the headset is enough for a Thomson. I believe a Thomson requires about 37-38mm minumum sticking up which is about 1.5 inches. Three inches??? Trois pouces??? 3 ? That doesn't sound right. Are you measuring clamp height or total rise of the extension? Eastons are pretty tall but require 45mm of steer tube (I think). I just put a new stem on so I still have the dimensions floating around in the recent memory part of my brain, but its getting fuzzy. But a 3 inch clamping height has not been seen by my eyes.

some BMX stems have a much smaller clamping area (steerer tube clamp)........so try one of those (but you'll need to use bars with a BMX diameter clamp).

Also try a lower stack height headset. some of the cheaper loose-ballbearing type headsets are very low.

his steerer was 7 inches - it was goin into a bike with a long head tube(steel). ended up getting a new Z1 for it... so all worked out in the end.
