That $3K would buy a nice bicycle...
I don't even keep track; it would just make me mad. I'm sure my numbers are pretty close to yours. However, my truck gets about 24 MPG, but I drive a lot of miles...

Not sure about last year... but this year I'd be surprised if I've put more than 100 gallons in my car so far, at a cost of probably $200-250 total.

Yay for Hondas. :)

here's a synopsis:

months owned car: 16
miles driven: 14,000
miles per tank: 400
gallons per tank: 13.2
total gallons bought: 462
total $ for gas (using same $/gal as JBP): $1025

but, i need to subtract the $200 i got for driving ~500 miles for business on a trip.

so net cost to me has been about $800 for 13,500 miles. not counting stuff like insurance and maintenance, but those are minimal for my car (honda civic, and i've got a good driving record). and the car is totally paid for.

the cost for the trailer hitch and bike rack was almost $500 in total.

moral of the story:

hey kids, if you are wondering what BMW or Audi to buy, take a look at this post.

my amex year end summary says i spent $2,020.07 on gas in 2005. 8 months of that was with a 16 mpg pathfinder, 3.5 was with a 19-28 mpg wrx, and that included a lot of driving (including a cross country drive). other fun how-much-toshi-spent-in-2005 facts:

$597.00 on lift tickets
$2,443.20 at various supermarkets
$1,076.97 at restaurants
$788.60 on airline tickets

How do you guys keep track of this stuff? I have never gotten a broken down summary of exactly what and where I spent my money for the year.......

Unless you are deducting it for buisness purposes, what does it matter?

Estimate, I haven't owned my truck for a year yet:

60 mile commute, each way = 120 miles daily

250 total commute days (5 day work week, two weeks off total)

120x250 = 30,000 commuting miles / 20 mpg average with traffic and the way I drive = 1500 gallons of gas @ $2.50 per gallon =

$3750.

This is commute only, not counting weekend trips and such.

Ugh.

Edit: add tolls to this - $750 yearly grand total for commute is minimum $4500.

Kill me.

:ouch:

american express keeps tabs of all this and gives a year end summary broken down by category. their system of categorization isn't perfect but it's not half bad :thumb: . all that + no fee + 1-5% cash back (for amex blue cash).

I have engineer's disease - I have kept a gas expenditure and mileage spreadsheet for years - pulled summaries from that.
Up until last year I think, I still had just about every paycheck stub since I started working. About 20 years worth.

Why.....................??:help:

So far I have commuted zero miles in my truck. I have either ridden to the train, or taken the bus. $72 a month for an all zone pass that the company pays for.

Easy, "QuickBooks Pro", I've been using it for 6 years. Can't imagine life without it... controls my bank accounts, prints my checks, does my taxes, journals my credit cards, etc. It allows me to do 15-20 bills with full record keeping and printed checks, in about 5-10 min. Try pulling that off with hand checks sometime.

Fuel status for 2005:

Total Expense $5775.77
Total Gallons 2221.45
Total Miles 42,207

Yeah, no crap. I have no clue what I spent on gas last year. Probably in the neighborhood of $3,000, plus the wife's gas-friendly vehicle.

I drive 70 miles a day, plus lots of weekend road trips.

gas... it s one of those unavoidable expenses... unless you live in the city and ride public transport to work (do you guys even have public transport in the US ;) )...

seriously, i hate public transport... it s for poor people and the homeless, plus everyone stinks... i d prefer to pay for my gas and vehicle and not have to deal with the odours of foul bastids...

i guess we put 1200 - 1500 gallons of gas in our xc70 last year... about 25000 miles / around 20mpg... premium runs about 2.75 here so thats around 3500 - 4100 USD... yeah, sure it d buy a nice bike JBP... but you still be freakin walking to the LBS to buy it...

35-40 bucks worth every two weeks. sooooo, 1040 dollars plus road trip gas. We didn't road trip too much last year so I'm going to guesstimate about 500 for that. So about 1500 dollars.

I don't really keep track. My daily commute is only 20 miles, including coming home for lunch. Weekends have me driving a bit to ride and see friends. My car averages 25 mpg or so. When the weather is nice I commute on the motorcycle which gets from 40-75 mpg depending on how twisty my wrist feels.

857 gallons at an average of at least $2.30 = $1911.00. I haven't had the car for quite one year yet but will have 30,000 miles on it by then. I get 35 MPG and drive 100 miles every work day so now I rarely drive anywhere on weekends. I've taken to bicycling from my house because the idea of driving somewhere to ride is no longer appealing.

I drove my truck for a while - it has 2 15 gallon tanks - I had to fill up every week as it gets about 14 MPG. That sucked.

Last year I put about 400 gallons in my car. I saved 250 gallons by riding to week 1-3 times a week.

you'll fit right in in the u.s. :nopity:

most cities aren't this way, sure, but in dc, boston, manhattan, portland, and seattle (just to name a few i'm familiar with) the public transit is excellent.

my commute to work is about 6-7 miles roundtrip.

my primary car last year for the most part was a toyota echo (yaaaaay!!!).
put 5000 miles on it. at 32mpg average... :156 gallons. at about US$ 4.8 = about 750 bucks of gallon on that car.

on the other hand, half-finished 69 camaro with a big block, used veeeery sparcely for sunday morning drive around the block and stuff like that (now it has bad compression and the engine is already on .060.. so another engine would be nice.. probably gonna get a used small block)
1 roundtrip to the beach, 60 miles away. $80... niice.....

i had an evo6 for 7-8months last year, that was my main ride for a little while... 13mpg of love....
