I was looking at the Toshi thread (dang) and started thinking about how many vehicles I've totaled. Here's my list and who was at fault.

Custom 69 VW Bug - Both at fault. He was speeding and I didn't look well enough. Destroyed his Harley and his wife left him cause his girlfriend was on the bike!

89 Geo Prism - My fault. Fell asleep at the wheel, flipped car off of enbankment. The only time I've ever been knocked out. Waking up with your car sliding sideways through the wet grass at 60 is quite an experience.

2001 Misubishi Dimage - His fault. CV joint failed and locked wheel to the side, he veered head-on into my lane. I only avoided killing his wife with some lock-to-lock heel-toe driving. Guy who was behind me said "That was a nice piece of driving son."

0 totalled.

3 accidents. Rear ended while stopped at red lights twice and once when I slid into a sign post while failing to attempt driving up a steep icy hill.

I've totaled none while driving. I had one totaled in the parking lot of my apartment while I was in my sleeping. Some bastard drunk hit it. He must have been going 100 mph through the parking lot. He hit my car, my car hit the wall of the apartment building and my girlfriend's car (also totaled) My girlfriend's car hit my roommates car which had $4000 of damage (not totaled). We found the drunk dude's car a block away and had the police have a little chat with him. He had absolutely no recollection of the accident and denied the whole thing ever happened. Fortunately I had big pieces of his car embedded in mine and it was pretty easy to prove he did it.

2 accidents in my life – never totaled a car.

17 yr old and driving father’s '86 Jeep with the top down. Paper in back seat started to fly around and I grabbed it... then rear - ended some dude. No visible damage to either car. He said I was doing 40. I showed the cop a receipt from the store 100 yards away and asked how it was that 6 cyl jeep went from 0 to 40 in less than 100 ft. No claims were made…

21 yrs old - went to see a band with my buddies. Carburetor in my '79 CJ7 Jeep was acting up, and it was raining. Tried to pull into a parking lot, hydroplaned and hit a pole. Broke the windshield with my head (yes I was wearing a seatbelt), buddy dented my glove box with his knee(so was he). Frame was slightly tweaked... but nothing that we couldn't re-arrange by adjusting the body panels. Was moving out of state anyway - sold it (with full disclosure of damage) and got a decent commuter.

I miss that Jeep.

83 Mazda GLC -- guy in an el camino made a left turn in front of me. Totaled my car; took a chip out of his bumper. Only owned the car for 5 days.

82 Honda Accord -- Moved over on a back country road to make room for an approaching car to pass. Hit some loose gravel in a corner. Rolled 1 1/2 times in a fresh plowed field.

The Cursed Car:
Didn't total it but, I had a 91 CRX that 1) a buddy flipped into a ditch. $10, 000 worth of damage to a $12, 000 car. I should have just paid the extra $1000 I owed on it and left it in the junkyard. 2) Then it was involved in a rear end collision -- still don't know where that old guy teleported from. 3) GF was driving and a cop pulled out of a turn off on HWY 1. 4) Aunt was driving it and somebody backed out of a parking spot in front of her.

1 totaled. A car drove across the median and hit me on the interstate. A few accidents where I was hit. 1 was my fault. I have countless amounts of damage from horses, cattle and fences.

I was riding with a friend in high school and he looks at me and says "Put your seatbelt on, I'm going to roll the car." He rolled it 4 times. It was freaky looking out the window; grass, sky, grass, sky etc.

I rolled my civic just under a year ago, me and my friend walked out of it. Pretty scarry having to roll down(well up) the windown and click off the seatbelt and drop to the ground.

Four totaled cars in 20 hard years of driving.

* '81 Toyota Celica- my car/my fault; fell asleep at the wheel, sideswiped a median cub, busted a wheel, popped a tire, bent an axle, lost a grease seal, damaged an axle housing, and burned up the gears & differential trying to drive it home(due to contraband in car).

* '84 Mercury Marquis- parents' car/50% fault of guy who cut me off & 50% my fault for still being somewhat tipsy after my Super Bowl keg party from the night before.

* '89 Ford Tempo 4D- parents' car/100% fault of teenage girl driving who was cited for failure to yield right-of-way on divided highway; her passenger was hospitalized and her insuance company tried(unsuccessfully) to wiggle out of paying because the new Jetta had just been purchased that day as a graduation gift and they said insurance was not valid until midnight(the accident occurred just prior to midnight).

* '94 Ford Aspire- my car/100% fault of rice racer driving girlfriend's fartcanner on a suspended license who was cited for failure to yield right-of-way on divided highway; I was hospitalized and sued(successfully) the girlfriend's insurance company which tried to get out of paying by saying the boyfriend was not an authorized driver.

1-'95 Chevy Astro, I was 16, rear ended a Lexus on the interstate at 40MPH. Driver inexperience...was trying to check the huge blind spot whilst merging at the same time. Lane I was merging into decided to randomly come to a complete halt in the middle of a fairly clear, fast moving freeway. Not enough time to stop, evasive manuevers would've=roll. No one was hurt, but the woman in the Lexus milked the insurance company for all it was worth with an ambulance chaser lawyer.

I think you need to elaborate on this.
He would buy those old datsuns that ran great for like 400 each and just trash them. I was riding with him when he jumped another one off of a railroad crossing through an intersection and the stoplight passed about 2 feet over the top of a car (car was 4-5 feet off the ground.) It landed so hard the whole suspension bottomed out and a giant cloud of sparks flew out. (And my teeth clicked together, hard) He's the only person I know with the balls to jump a car, much less right in the center of town on Saturday night.

Two motorcycles.
One 22 years ago in a 140 mph get-off during a race, thus the bad left knee. Six inches of my tibia were smashed into tiny fragments. I still can't run.

One about three years ago, getting of the freeway the car in front of me suddenly stopped. I had plenty of room to stop but hit a very slick paint arrow and the next thing I know I'm looking at the asphalt from 3" and smelling my helmet visor melt as I slide.

'01 Volvo V40
-July 2001 around corner from my house. Was stopped waiting to make left hand turn onto my street when I was hit dead center rear by a girl not paying attention. She was estimated to be going between 40 & 60 mph.

1990 Yamaha FZR 1000- Emergency Pedestrian Avoidance Maneuver.
Came around the corner pretty hot, saw girl walking in road, went wide, got into grass, which became ditch, at 70 mph. Sommersaults are fun, weeeeeeeee
1966 Volvo P1800- Got a little loose coming through an esse section, car swapped ends, went over the ditch, through a telephone pole, took out a few trees, bounced off an embankment back over the ditch onto the street. Windshield was still intact in grass across the street, car still drove even though only two wheels touched the ground at a time.
1981 Volvo 242 Turbo- Was rear ended by an old lady who was busy peting her dogs and didn't realize she had drifted into the turn lane.
1965 Volvo P1800- Let girlfriend drive it to work, she thought it was gonna handle like my miata and took the offramp at full tilt, right into the armco railling.

-'86 Dodge aries: hit a light pole in a vacant parking lot in a snowstorm while on my learners permit. No good excuse, it was stupid. $800 in damage and I drove it w/ a salvage title.

-'87 Mazda B-something pickup: A hurricane came up the bay in '96 and flooded the potomac, so school was closed. The winds dropped a tree onto my truck while I slept in.

I've had a pair of rain induced fender benders in the last 10 years or so, but neither were total losses.

I've hit a couple of deer too...once when I was 17. Killed the little deer (eventually) and broke the headlight on my dad's dodge mirada and then last winter, I hit one (in my driveway)...no damage to my car, but he did leave a body-print in the driveway snowbank

wow. the stories!!

90 something suzuki samurai. guanella pass above georgetown. my buddy was driving a little too fast in six inches of snow. the words "i think you ought to slow down a bit" were passing through my teeth when he swerved to miss a pothole. to our right was a 200+ ft drop. thank god he swerved left.

we flipped in what to me was the most violent explosion of motion ever. like getting high sided on a motor bike. right before we got upside down i realized my hand was between the rollcage/windshield brace and the soft top. i pulled my hand down...err...up just in time to avoid losing my fingers.

we landed back on the wheels with engine running. i asked my pal if it would be OK with him if I drove for the rest of the day. he thought that was a really good idea.

then we hiked up to the top of the old guanella resort and snowboarded down a couple of times.

knock on wood. i have had a couple of close calls while driving, but never anything terminal for the car.

3 cars:

1 Mini, 1 Ford Escort and 1 piece of crap I hit in the Escort. All basically my fault, but the Mini slid out on a slick spot whilst cornering at boring speed in a line of traffic.
