How much insulation in the attic is enough ?

when I bought my house many moons ago. in the attic as far as insualtion went was a basic covering of R-15 , I have added another layer of R-19 which sould give my attic about an r-34 ratting , where is the point of diminishing returns on adding insulation in the attic ?

Add insulation until cracks appear in the ceiling below from the weight.

Then add another layer.

I was told by the guy did the inspection on my new home that you can over-insulate. He said that a house needs to "breathe" and too much insulation will hinder that. I don't know if it's true or not, but he was a licensed inspector.

Completely depends on the climate.
In Seattle, the winters are so mild, that it really doesn't pay to insulate much at all.
In most climates, I'd think anything over 25 wouldn't be cost effective.
