I have a friend who is going to paint 1 side of my house

If you can't tell, that's the side of the house that gets all the exposure so the paint is peeling off very badly. The chimney is scheduled to be repointed the end of the month too.

It requires scraping off the old paint, putting down an oil based primer and then the paint.

How much should I pay him??

Also - I was told Behr makes a good oil based primer for the wood shingles. I have no idea what or how much to buy for primer or paint?!

HELP!

CT.
The gallons will tell you how much coverage per can, usually they are pretty close...does not look like to big a job so probably a day and a half worth labor..$$$$...you guys should do vinyl siding...never paint again......

I'm currently painting my house and it is a lot of work. If you wanted to be fair I'd say hourly is the way to go as the amount of work required to do a good job can really change depending on the conditions. The northern exposure side of my house took about 12 hours to prep, and put 2 coats on. I have about the same amount of time on the southern exposure and I only have half the first coat done.

Hard to say. Is this a friend who is doing you a favor or a friend who you are just hiring because he is a friend? If I remember correctly when I worked construction my boss quoted things like that at 10-15$/hour. Of course this was 10 years ago and he only paid me $6/hour to do the work.

He's a friend who's been let go from his job so he has the time to do it - and I don't :) So he's not a professional painter but I know he's done interiors and exteriors before.

It's not rocket science, just requires a lot of tedious work. Just remember the prep is the hardest and most important part. I'd say $15/hour (labor only) would be fair considering he is not an "expert". Does he have a sprayer? Doing it all by brush takes way too long. Have the paint sprayed on then worked in with a brush.

I'd really just talk with the guy and settle on a price.

Watchin' you. Writing it all down.
Pay him minimum wage and tell him to be thankful for the work.....

Or you could get some quotes from a couple of painting companies, to get an idea of what it should be. I'd be wary of hourly with someone with limited experience as he could end up painting your house for a month.

I like my first idea better but you folks with heart and conscious might like the second.

I really have NO idea. I was thinking $500 - so for 16 hours work, that's $31/hour! Maybe I pay too good!

Actually I'd propose another scenario of getting that slacker IRB off his ass and on a ladder.

MBC, market price for that job is ~$600 time and materials for the siding. You'll need 1 gallon primer (California Trouble Shooter 75% tinted to finish color) and 2 gallons paint (california 2010; $40/ea).

I'd estimate that at 15hrs. My foremen make $30 with minions making $10-15. Offer the guy $400 flat rate and you buy materials.
Unless the guy has a commercial sprayer, make him use a brush.

THANKS!

I'm pretty sure he said he's buying brushes - so no sprayer.

It's a major brand so your local specialty paint store should have it. They may have a dealer listing on their site too. Ben-Moore and Sherwin-Williams are fine too but we only use California 2010. My crews do 100+ houses/yr along the Mass coast and it's far and away the best stuff around here.

If the paint is pealing, then use a light power wash first to remove the loose paint, Don't use too much pressure or you'll destroy the shingles. I don't think priming is necessary, just do a few heavy coats should do it.

They can all color match, right? I mean I can take a piece of the paint with me (that's how bad it is - it just peels right off).

thanks for all the help!

Yep, just take a piece in and they will computer match it.
If the whole wall is peeling badly (ie most paint will come off with scraping) there's no need to wash it. Have the guy scrape like crazy then one coat primer and one coat finish.

Just try to get a bigger piece. 2"x2" maybe? I know when I worked for Home Depot things had to be about that size for the computer to be able to match them.

are you thinking too low?

or are you making a joke saying that I'm worth more than $31/hour?

c'mon - I'm lost here! lol

No... that is not a $/hr kinda job there... lots involved with scaffolding/ladders, pre-paint prep etc... if you can get someone to paint that for $500 you are doing great.

Just to see what I mean, go to your local paint store and ask for some painters and get some bids on it.

Yup. Painters cost a lot of jack. $500 seems reasonable to me. If you can find a drunk painter you'll get it for less though.

Oil. Either the quick dry or standard will work; i prefer the standard but it will probably require an extra day to dry completely given the cold nights vs the quick dry which will be ready overnight.

Unless the guy is a total hack you shouldn't need to worry about him marring the shingles excessively.
