I've heard that Olympic weight lifters are always looking for new ways to train, maybe some of those burly midgets could help you out, ala kidwoo's idea.

Well first you can detonite some explosives under it which should lift it into the air sufficiently as well as blowing it to smithereens. Now you are free to ride your bike on a actual trail the way it was meant to be; rather than on a "stunt" like a circus clown....... ;)

while 2 x 4 work ok for the "trail" part, I wouldn't going anything smaller than some 6 x 6 posts to hold it in the air. You could use some 2 x 4's to then cross brace the 6 x 6's, should be relatively stable.

I hate stunts around my way because they're the latest fad, are usually poorly constructed, offer no real purpose, and pollute the environment. Plus they usually draw enough attention for the authorities to justify closing down the trail.

It's all about appropriate use of constructions. A ladder for the sake of a ladder is dumb. And if you don't know how to build it, then don't. You're putting yourself and others at risk if you use substandard construction techniques, and you risk having a trail shut down, which ruins it for everyone.

Take a look at the pictures on the Northstar photogallery and see how they built there's...They might be cemented but the design is good within itself.

And also..anybody here in a downhill forum who is pissed off by ladders seriously deserves to be shot. Stunts are a bad thing now?

Also to the idiot who says ladders pollute the environment IMBA did a study that showed it was less harful because it kept the bikes off the topsoil more. Go look on their website if you don't believe me.

theres two sides to every coin. yeh they keep us off the top soil but when you look at what a stunt out in the woods is made of its made from trees that have been choped down. now that can be a good thing if done right but its never done right so both sides have a good argurment. and if you are a newb dont correct a more experianced rider just cause he stated his opinion thats what this forum is here for. ohh and for the record i love stunts there so much fun and they bring a new aspect to ridin. they work on your technical skill when it comes to balance. peace and keep ridin

Do you think painted and treated construction material should be littered throughout the trails? I'm a real idiot when I worry about trail closures because the place looks like a dump...

So does a freeway overpass. Doesn't mean it's pretty to look at or that it enhances the existing evironment.

Funny you mention it. I actually stood there at my local mountain at the top of the new "log ride" trail and watched all the freeriders fall on their ass attempting it... then rode the first section first try on my long ass downhill bike  People talk about people looking like circus clowns on a bmx bike.... cumon; "skinnies"? Gimme a break. They are boring and make a perfectly good trail choppy and slow. Build whatever you want in your own backyard....

Since when does downhill have to include stunts? How many teeter-totters have you seen on a norba or wc course? Weee flame war :p

Okay, since this thread is somewhat derailled, I have this to say:
You imply that when stunts are made out of trees that aren't chopped down, that it's a good thing, but you go on to say that it is never done that way, so it's automatically bad. To say that it's a good thing WHEN stunts are built with deadfall, and then go onto say that it simply never happens is completely illogical. Go watch the bonus footage at the end of Quick and Dirty.
Also, if you're a n00b, and you're right, it is perfectly okay to correct a more experienced rider if they're wrong. I'm not saying anyone is right or wrong here, just that experience isn't the determinator of truth.
</rant>
I agree totally with what's being said here... either go learn some basic construction skills from someone, or don't build the stunts, especially in a public place. Oftentimes kids who weigh 120 will build stunts that are "sturdy" until someone who weighs 210 rides it, and it collapses, injuring the rider badly. If you don't know, it's not okay to experiment. This is not an area where mistakes are okay. I hate to discourage you from building trails, but really, if you're going to do some work on a trail, build a trail out of dirt, or a short ladder over an obstacle... try not to get creative and make a NS style ladder. Keep it simple, as the more complex it gets, the more dangerous it is, and the more building skill is required.
Best solution yet: Donate your wood to someone who knows how to build stunts.

Or, you could let people ride them because they think they are fun. and how do they pollute the environment? Just because you dont like riding somthing, doesnt mean that you have to put others down because they do. Riding is riding, you should be glad he is out supporting the sport, not inside dicking around on the internet and watching TV getting fat.

And how do you think people learn to build stuff? they are born that way? No, there is a learning curve, and asking questions before building shows that he DOES care about the saftey of others and himself, because he doesnt want it to be wobbly and unsafe.

I am not saying this directly to you either, I just happened to quote your statement. I dont understand why there has to be this hatred against other riders that are supporting the same sport you are

Simmons, Schley, Berrecloth, and all the others, I would say are DAMN GOOD riders, better than anyone on this board. But because they ride stunts does that make them dumb?

As far as keeping your ladder up off the ground, like was said earlier, do not use 2x4. Get some 4x4 or 6x6 and dig it into the ground 3+ feet. Then brace them with 2x4. Also, please do not screw/nail directly into living trees. It is bad for them.

just my 2 cents
