As I said, I have no other information besides what I received. Honda has not yet answered, neither have any of the people involved with the Honda team.

No idea how they plan on teaching people to service this gearbox (remember, they had dedicated honda techs).

Hopefully this ushers in a new era of profesionalism in our sport, and a new era of transparency for the Honda team. It was understandably closed to public viewing this year, which made it VERY hard for Greg, who is extremely personable and outgoing.

saying that this back was simply "proof of concept".

All I can say is I'm not buying a BACK...I've already got one. My wife is on it non-stop. Why would I need another one?

Seriously though....now the question is this:

Will the gearbox be the CVT or the "mini-derailleur in a box"???

Update! We just got offical word in from Honda that no "official" plans have been concretely laid out for production as of yet, however they do plan on putting the RN01 into production!

This probbly means that negotiations have begun, but they haven't signed on the dotted lineas of yet.

Hopefully Honda Financing will apply...... I wonder if the Fork, rear shock and brakes will end up being more off the shelf brands?

I heard the aftermarket swingarms and mountainspeed upgrade kits were going to make this bike kick ASS.

wow...now all that awesome "Honda branded" moto gear from No Fear & Fox appeals to me again....and I have a sudden urge to order a ProCircuit catalog......

....does this mean that real pits and actual hot chics will come to DH races like they are to moto???

yeah, that MSRP of $5799.00 for a full on gas powered innovation of pure ingenuity and electronic technological advancement should strike home just how much we pay for a bicyle with no engine and tons and tons of breakable crap on it.

Retail on a Demo 9 Pro - $5500.00??? What's wrong with this picture?   :mumble: :mumble:

I knew it!

As for price, I am sure that Honda has exponentially more production capabilities than any bike mfg. How many MILLIONS of metal parts does Honda form eanch year??? I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it won't be as insainly expensive as it would be if anyone else tried to build it. But who knows what the suspension will end up costing. Oh well. A man's allowed to dream, right?

I think this part gave the intial break away:
"Honda has ordered "several thousand" gearbox downhill bikes into production"
does anyone sell dh bikes in that quantity?

Also, I could easily see it being more expensive than their dirt bikes, smaller quantity's, more expensive materials (carbon and ti), moe emphasis on weight reduction, less parts overlap (ie, their are parts on the dirtbike that are used on probably everyone of their models, the dh bike would be entirely new). I wouldn't be surprised to see a $7k msrp. They'll sell like crazy at that price too. I wonder if you'll have to get them through a honda dealer, or if they'll set up accounts with bike shops?

If we all didn't mind riding 200lb DH bikes then they would cost much less. When you've got to build with materials that are both light and strong then they are very expensive.
Honda entering the market could be great for prices and technology. First of all we know they are a huge corp. and can spend the time and money to develope the best knew tech. Secondly, they would probly be able to benefit with economies of scale in the production process, which equal lower prices to us. Thirdly, if they are able to make a profit in this industry then they may suck in others like yamaha, suzuki, KTM, etc. and certainly whatever tech they due use will become copied by the existing bike manafactures. The industry will move much more to perfect competition (low product differentiation, like dirtbikes) which is good for us because prices will come down. As we all know evolution is good for the sport. There may be a time where all bikes and the products on them are built almost completely in house (like dirt bikes). Oh no what would all the forum monkys talk argue about then?

Maybe its just a licensed version of the gearbox Vs. a true Honda product. Kind of a Giant or whoever with a Honda decal. Seems hard to believe they would want to deal with consumers and the infrastructure for supporting bicycles.

you might want to search up on dw's reply to this often-used argument that doesn't make a lot of sense. let's say you walk down to your honda dealer and buy a brand new cr250r. then you go to the moto track and race it. assuming you have an equal skill level to everybody else who has a modded bike, you're going to get crushed. the first huge price leap will be going to a crf450 f, which is around $1000 difference depending on manufacturer (two stroke vs 4 stroke). then you have to add exhaust, good rims, protapers, polish out the cylinder and get a lighter piston and cams, re-jet your aftermarket carb for the new exhaust and intake filter . . .

let's put it this way. buying a cr250f riding it stock is like buying the sweetest mongoose at walmart. it might have shimano parts and the cheapest oem rockshox fork every concocted, but it's not a downhill bike. production MX bikes are made up of cast (not forged, cast) parts that are made by the tens of thousands. if you want to buy ricky's bike, you will pay between $35,000 and $60,000 (according to twmx) depending on how pimped out you want to settings and paying to get your suspension tuned. on the other hand, you can literally buy kyle straight's bike. you can buy van dine's bike for under $5000 brand new, i know this because we put it together and there are no weird secret parts on it. you can get into a serious DH raceable bike for under $2500 if you're careful that has good parts on it and will last through a few seasons.

that's another thing. when was the last time you had to rebuild anything between practice runs at a race. like scheduled maintanance between every single run of every day? motorcycles are way more expensive than mountain bikes. i agree that some bicycles and parts are overpriced, but the "i could spend less money and get a moto" argument is bunk.

and i'm not attacking you bizutch, i think that $5000 is pretty much the ceiling for a production complete DH machine at MSRP. this is for every guy who thinks he's buying chad reed's factory YZ450 when he plops down seven grand. guess what: you're not.
