I'm gonna make a nice scarf (well, multiple nice scarves). However, I have a few questions:
1) How long should a proper scarf be on a girl of average height (lets say between 5'2" and 5'8")? I'm thinking like 5ish feet, but I dunno, I'm not big on wearing scarves. I'm thinking like 6" wide or so.
2) The scarf I'm making now is all knit-stitched with size 8 needles and worsted weight yarn, while it looks like a nice enough thing, it's not all that soft (I mean it's soft, but it's not incredibly soft or fluffy at all), what should I up the yarn/needle size to to make it more of a comfy scarf? (the yarn on this one is also acrylic, I'm not going synthetic for these though) They're mostly for girls if that matters any (I dunno what kind of scarves girls like)
3) Here's the fashion part. Since some school colors are like white and one other color, (white and purple, white and red) I'd go with the actual color (mostly white stuff gets dirty too easy), and have any additional stuff (embroidery or those dangly things on the ends) be white (I've got to figure out how to make the dangly things first, though I know kind sorta how to do the embroidery), but what do I do in the case of multiple colors? Like Miami has Orange/Green, Hofstra has Yellow/Blue, etc. Do I go for one solid and the additional crap with the other (if so, which one do I use as the base and which as the frilly crap)? Or should I try a multi-colored scarf? If so, how would I go about doing that without making it look crappy (I mean, I know how to knit in other colors, though I'd much rather work with just one for time and ease purposes), but what doesn't look like ass? I don't much care for stripes. And going back to the mutliple color schools, does it matter the person's hair or eye color? I can provide that if it matters for picking what the major color is.
4) Where can I find a good collection of yarns (read: many kinds in many colors) that preferably come in skiens (I like them a lot more than balls, a 95 yard ball isn't quite enough, at least not for the size 8 needle worsted stuff, and I would like to stick with one thing of yarn, plus, I like the skiens more because of the manner in which I withdraw the yarn, just pull and pull and pull for long time rather than the ball all tumbling around and crap). I got some real nice merino wool yarn last year from yarnmarket.com, but it was in a 95 yard ball (it is also a bit small for my purposes). I've already tried walmart (lol) and a c moore (I think thats it), and I don't know that the michaels is closer than wayne, nj, so it's a decent hike (45 mins or so), so online is better than off (besides, I probably won't have an opportunity to go out and buy for a few days at least, if I ship with relatively expedited shipping it can be here in 3-5 days).
I'm probably forgetting other stuff, but the big questions are the colors and the place to buy, I could probably figure out a needle size and yarn thickness.
Also, I'd like to keep the multiple colors of each scarf the same exact yarn (other than color of course), though different scarves may be different yarns because of color availability, at least any 2 colors involved in the same scarf should be available in the same yarn.
