I've only ever ridden mech, but from what I understand, hydraulics have more 'feel' to them - you can tell exactly how hard the pads are pressing on the disc. It makes scientific sense - with cables, you just pull, they stretch a bit, and any leftover force slows you down. With hydraulics there is total feedback, the fluid doesn't compress so every bit of pressure you pud on the lever goes straight to the disc, and you can feel it resisting - it's as if you were leaning down and grabbing the discs yourself.

good mechanical brakes (avid bbd7's) can, when set up properly, have almost the same power as entry level to mid grade hydro's. a really nice hydro brake will still perform better but its all relative to the $ you want to dump into it. the brakes that come on the aniki to be specific are entry level hayes mech. and having ridden that exact bike (only parking lot test mind you) i have to say they suck. they have all the feel of mid quality vee brakes and are a pain in the A$$ to set up. if anything it would be worth looking into upgrading them to avids. just my $.02

They both have there goods and bads.

Mech- Spongier feel , you can use SIS housing tho to eliminate some of this. On the other hand they are much easier to maintain if you snap a cable.

Hydro- More responsive , but if you yank a line you got no brakes and who carries a hyrdo line plus tools and oil in there pack? Not to mention if you get oil on your pads and disc thre pretty worthless after that.

I use Hayes HFX 9's tho on my bike and prefer Hydro over Mech. Hydros for me have a much better feel and alot more stopping power, Im riding a 05' Bighit
