After riding my mechanical disk brakes yesterday, I realized mechanical disk brakes aren't quite cutting it. I looked around and saw that the Hayes HFX brakes might be a good choice for my bike (Specialized P2). I heard both good and bad things about the brakes...are they really that bad if they're setup correctly?

Thanks,

Pete

Hayes HFX are good brakes, and Avid Juicy are good brakes too. From what I read, the Avid's are as good or better than the Hayes. I haven't spent any (much) time with the Avids, but I've spent a lot of time with Hayes. I like the power and modulation of the Hayes, and since I'm a set it and forget it type of person, the supposed lack of adjustability of the levers doesn't phase me.

I have owned the julies and they are good brakes and magura stands behind all thier brakes for 5 years no questions,I know this.I have a set of hayes on one of my bikes right now and another has the avids,I think they are both great brakes and iether any of the three(hayes avid magura) would be a good choice.

Everyone rags on Hayes modulation, but I have never had a problem being able to avoid locking up my wheel or feathering off a little speed.

Hayes are good, reliable brakes and parts are easily available everywhere. Just something to think about.

My vote goes to shimano brakes. I've had hayes hfx-9s and they were on/off.

I've had shimano M555, M755, and the new LX brakes and they all work great. Not to mention mineral oil is stupid easy to work with and bleeding is easy. Spill the oil on my hands, hardwood floor, bike, etc and there is no fear of acid-like melting or explosion or whatever you get with dot fluid.

I have the Shimano 525's. For 3 years now I have run them with no oil changes and flawless braking with great feel to them. 8 in up front, 6 in. out back. Dangerboy levers.

If your going to buy hayes your better off with Mag's for duribility or el camino's for all the bells-n-whistles...

the hayes 9's have duribility issues...

I have a set of used Mag's w/ custom levers and 8" rotors/mounts I could sell if your intrested... they are collecting dust (Pm me if intrested)
