Anyone have a setup? I've always been curious about it so I could have fresh homegrown vegetables year round. Basic stuff, tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, that kind of stuff.

Would this take a large amount of energy?

Not a high amount, and asking electricity amount.
Speaking on behalf of a "friend", he grew a single plant under a few 60w fluorescent lights. Cost for running the lights 24 hours per day plus one fan, was pennies. Little heat emitted from them as well.

An HPS or MH light was going to be a few dollars per month, but the equipment cost was much more.

It worked. :thumb:

Modern full spectrum grow lights are led. Operating costs are going to be negligible until you start approaching commercial scale.

Hydroponics are cool but if something in the system goes haywire and no one is around to catch the problem, you could lose your plants very quickly! Look into a wick system which is kind of a passive hydroponic/soil hybrid thingamajig.

Why not grow in soil?

What sort of veggies are you after? Leafy greens?
