So I saw a post about an urban DH race in Mexico (http://www.ridemonkey.com/forums/showthread.php?t=168113) and really wanted to go, but I thought I had to travel for work so I was going to miss it.

Well the work trip was moved to Wednesday and my roommate wanted to go to Ensenada (he used to hang out there many years ago), and even offered to pay for the hotel… so at 10:30 on Friday night I made the decision to do it!

Saturday morning we got up and drove down, apparently Jesus is big in Mexico.

Finally got there and met up with a huge group of monkeys (too many list) and we took over a little motel.

Then it was off to practice.
Dirt up top (not me):

After practice my roommate and I headed out for some food and drinks… LOTS of drinks. We didn’t meet up with the rest of the group until we stumbled back when they were just heading out… starting to feel a bit old. Anyway after a night of very little sleep despite my attempts to get drunk and pass out – it was time to race.

First set of corners:

Fork finally started to compress again…

Then there was a road to another dirt section – launch into a an off camber area and then a few minor jumps (sorry no pics). After that you went across another road and into a neighborhood.

First corner heading into the Neighborhood:

Coming out of the neighborhood:

At this point it was time for what everyone wanted to see – the stair section! You went down a series of gradual stairs, made a 90 degree left and then a 90 degree right… then avoid a few trees and make your way down the steps as fast as you can!

Just at 90 degree left:

On the main stair section:

From the finish line looking at the stairs just after the 90 degree right:

From here it is was a right hand turn on a road then a left to a table top. The table top looked very scary and I never did get the speed right (yup.. I’m lame), but at least some of the guys did!

One awesome thing was the crowds! As you may have noticed in the other pictures, there was a good sized group and they were pretty loud.

The hero of the day was this kid alejandro (sp?). He was riding this, no front brake, no real front suspension, not sure how that rear was, and 20” wheels.

He got 1st in his class… but was faster than a lot of the guys (myself included) in other classes as well.

Gotta love that the trophy was wine, and even the young kids got it! Label was pretty cool too:

It was also great meeting a bunch of Monkeys that I read about all time… just too many to list.

Thanks to DHS, MERRRJIG, FFAT, POTATOGUN, my roommate and everyone else who got shots of me – I am usually the one taking the pictures so it is VERY nice to be able to see so many of me!!!

I was always a bit skeptical of racing in Mexico...I think I did twice. Looks like a cool event and a great crowd turnout!
