...going up a hill! :disgust1: I was standing and had a good rhythm going, but I was close to the edge of the road; the edge of the road and the shoulder aren't clearly defined and I ended up going onto the shoulder and sliding out. I've only crashed on the road one other time, earlier this year, and I walked away unscathed. Anyone have a close call or horror story about wrecking on the road bike?

I might have run off of the road into a tree/fence line a week or so ago. :poster_oops:

I'll keep my crash 1 mile from finish with the douche bag that turned in front of me a couple of months back. The CX bike was not really worthy discussing, other than I am retarded and rode Cory Heart style. ugh.

Been a while on the road bike. Biggest crash came when I hit a sandy patch while riding at night. Hit it mid turn and went down. Ouch.

I don't know if this counts, but I had a bad crash a little while ago on a sidewalk with my mountain bike. Basically, I flipped over sideways and got launched in the air going about 30-35 mph. Wrecked jersey, broken helmet and road errrr...sidewalk rash on my shoulder, arm and knee. Probably one of the dumber things I've done....

Only other time crashing on the road was on my road bike, uphill corner I hit some gravel and slid out.

worst road crash

tie

Car swung left across the centerline to turn right and I went through the windshield. I woke up on the operating table then 2 days later in the hospital bed with my face sewn back together with 24 external and 50 internal stiches

Broke a crank arm [shimano 600ex] in a sprint. right foot hit the ground and I sprained my knee. sternum hit the stem and split. got my forearm up over my head as I endoed and road rashed it and got a bone chip near the elbow, and and dislocated the shoulder. the helmet shattered. flipped onto my back and broke 3 ribs. it took 9 months to heal up completely. Only damage to the bike was a broken crank and rear deralier plus torn handlebar tape.

Two incidents while road riding come to mind.

Just bought my commuter (prolly had it for a month) and was crossing the intersection in front of my LBS (I had some parts to buy that day). 2 smoking hot women were on the corner waiting for the walk signal. I pull my best track stand (which mostly looks like an uncoordinated oaf on meth trying to out-pelvic-thrust Elvis). Light turns, crank, sternum meet stem, stem meet sternum, hands meet ground. Snapped my chain. I felt so cool. The chicks were obviously impressed cause they looked at me with complete admiration and adoration. Well...that and the laughing...that's what gave it away.

The other was just last week, when a cat almost killed me. See this post...

Was riding my SS Miyata (now geared) home from work one late spring day and there was a storm coming in from the south. This particular day was "move out" day on campus and public safety had no parking barriers up to keep folks from parking right on the corners etc. Anyway, this storm was coming in really hard and fast and the wind was picking up. I was south bound and just turned east when the wind caught one of those barriers and blew across the road into my path and took me out. No damage and I actually got a laugh about it.

that cat post was funny :) Yesterday I was descending a hill, probably going 35-40, and I had a deer run out in the road, stop, and stare at me…..I thought “I don’t have headlights, keep running!” I slowed down and as I got closer the deer ran

My own world inside my head
I had a good one, one day heading to work, I was moving along a nice sprint at about 40, car turned in front of me, so I cut hard left, got around the car, then hard right, to get out of traffic, and found some gravel neat teh gutter....... So now about 35, I hit the curb pretty much at a 45 degree angle. Broke fork, wheel, helmet, front wheel, and a crank arm. Ended up sliding across the driveways there a good 50 yards, so you can imagine the road rash. Oh yeah, and of coarse the driver didnt even notice anything happened till they were out of the Liquer store.

I got a cut in my tire at 40+ last summer up at Tahoe, went from 160 to 0psi in about .3 seconds. Thankfully I was running a tubular, so it stayed on the rim, and I was able to bring it to a stop without going over. I was shaking for about 15 minutes afterwards though, it would have been b-a-d...

My brother-in-law was doing ~35 and blew the front tire off the bead around a downhill sweeper. (He thinks it was a combo of the camber and a rut). Anyway, tire comes off bead, tube blows, tire shreds, somehow a miracle happens and he's able to stop upright....Rim's pretty beat, but I will never forget that tire that he brought home....holy crap. Gives me the willies just thinking about it.

A month or so ago I was descending this curvy hill with a tight 120 degree towards the bottom, before it straightens out and you nail it for the final steep fall.
come around corner, cranks like mad, get into tuck with chin on the bar....I hear this erie squeel coming from what I though was the front hub....'dry bearing?' I thought.
Came up to the next intersection and started to ge ton teh brakes and line up for the following left hander into traffic, which luckily there wasn't any at the time.
I let off the brake and swung the bike hard to the left....and instantly I was on the ground sliding. It was kinda funny how th ebike just didn't do what I wanted and just decided to lay down. Luckily it was slightly uphill right there so I can to a stop real fast without much sliding. Minimal road rash.
Turns out the high pitched noise was 140psi escaping my front tube through a real small hole. DOH!
Over a month later I still can't get over it. I'm such a puss right now on the road bike in corners...

I had a similar feeling for a long time after I had a CX tire on my road bike pop off the rim in a turn. Thankfully, it was in the woods and I stayed up, but it freaked me out. It was a hard corner that I slid the bike through a bit and the tire rolled off the rim (tube still inflated), kicked the back of the bike in the air like I had hit a big rock and I pivoted around almost 180 degrees it seemed.

Just two weeks ago I had a front blowout going over 30 on a narrow winding mountain road with a pretty steep and rocky drop. Luckily it happened as I was exiting a turn onto a fairly straight part and was able to keep it together. If it had happened mid-turn I would have been really screwed.

Ugh....ow.

Last night on the commute home I went down faster than Jenna Jameson...The trail was wet, it was a right-left chicane, and there were two dudes walking down the center of the path coming towards me. I swung wide on the left hander to avoid them and......whoooooosh...just went out. I hate road rash...now I can't bend my left knee...

Sux.

Crashed for the first time in a race today. 30mph into the last corner, pretty sure I was gonna win it, but dove in too hard and clipped a pedal. My tubular ended rolling off the rim. Lots of road rash. Bad.

Ouch! :( Make sure to keep the road rash moist, heals quicker
