I think we should divide the country into red and blue and then the righteous ones can do whatever the hell they want in "Jesusland". Comments?

Neither side has the moral high ground on this issue. Your average Christian doesn't scare me any more than your average hippy does.

Please tell me that this would mean dividing California. A nice tall fence stretching from Montery to Yosemite.

:D

The strange thing is no where in the Bible are Christians told to "take over the government" or have their own country/state/county etc. - this hunker down, defensive, us vs. them, mentality that permiates modern conservative Christianity here in the US is driving me crazy, and has absolutely no Biblical basis.

Anyway...........................

It's a vehicle. They're using that book to get on people's good side. It makes people feel at ease to surrender power to those that seem to be holding the same moral principals.

It's a sham.

The problem however is that "that Book" makes no statement about how followers of Jesus are to take over the govenment - in fact Jesus routinely talks trash with regards to the exisiting rules of His time.

Which brings me back to the point I tend to routinely make - Christians fall into this trap of believing uncritically anything labeled "Christian" - rather than doing what the Scriptures tell us "test everything, hold on to the good".

Right. And in no way does the Constitution dictate imperialism.

It's a "We'll do whatever the hell we want and make it look morally justified" way of running a country.

Gotta hand it to 'em, it's working great. We don't need to split the country red/blue, the right is ALREADY doing whatever they want with the whole country.

I would say that's a bit of an overstatement..................you know the whole "checks and balances" thing.

Note: this is as political as I get.

Yeah, sorry. I only speak in exaggerated terms...it's a speech impediment.

:D

But the current powers-that-be are definately working the checks and balances as far as they can.

Hope there are some trees left when they're finished. ;)

Here in the valley we got our share of zealots, and it's definately spreading like the plague ... but it ain't NOTHIN' like what ya'll got over there in the high desert. La Pine downright scares the piss out of me. The whole place is straight up psychologically broken. Like some kind of twilight zone bad B horror flick.

.... and no, I won't eat at their Salad Bars.

The problem is that the religion of Liberalism is equally as bad as christianity/islam/whatever and its practitioners are equally zealous in their struggle to gain power over others at all costs.

Both groups feel have the same distrust of each other and rightfully so.

Perhaps what he was trying to say is that many left-leaning people are at least as fervent in their beliefs and attempts to proselytize as are religious folk. PETA...ELF...Sierra Club...NOW...Vegans...HCI...all can be equally *insane* sounding to one who does not share their point of view.

Well I don't think the Sierra club is causing a deep schism in our society, but what do I know.

Difference:

Protection vs. domination.

All those groups listed above are about protecting something, not taking over this country through division and "spreading freedom" to (invading) other countries.

And the combined $$ resources of all those groups is nothing compared to the corporate fueled power of the right.

Evil corporate Amerika!

So far the US as a whole is more opposed to liberalism than it is to religion. Just look at who's winning elections on the national stage.

too late... fundamentalists are already going in numbers there to preach and convert...

a lot of bible belt schools and churches have "misionary programs" where fundy-college-kids spend the summer down there to preach, annoy nzers, convert and spill the seed of jesus (and theirs, or, if female, collect samples)...

fundies are taking over the world!!!!...

All of those groups listed are about protecting something INCLUDING religion, which seeks to protect the eternal soul. There are ebbs and flows in the fortunes of all competing interests, but rarely does he who is currently on top complain. It could be argued that this is a backlash against recent ACLU rulings which seek to blast the name of God from any public ediface like it were the name of Akhenaton.

At least the enviroment and animals actually exist. Score one for the Sierra Club and PETA.

What do you mean by "rarely does he who is currently on top complain?" The Christian right is the biggest bunch of whiners in the history of US politics. All they do is bitch about how they are persecuted because they don't get to stone faggots...
