No, just extreme right wing religious zealots. Those aren't true Christians in my view, more like Frankenstein's version.

Most Christians that I know are awesome people.

As opposed to the "conservatives" who want to burn everyone at the stake and take their money.

Not really. It seems to be a rather large rallying point.
Stoning faggots, really? I've heard the conservative position on homosexuality (ie James Dobson to name one) it has nothing to do with violence - unless you're equating disagreeing with gay marraige = stoning.

Emotional knee jerk inflamatory statements are just the type of thing you seem to condem these fundamentalist for.

What's that website of that Church? Something like www.fagsmustdie.com or something?

Don't give up, RM. If you lose this one, you've really lost.

At least the enviroment and animals actually exist. Score one for the Sierra Club and PETA.

What do you mean by "rarely does he who is currently on top complain?" The Christian right is the biggest bunch of whiners in the history of US politics. All they do is bitch about how they are persecuted because they don't get to stone faggots...
Yes they do, thanks to God. Shot on goal DENIED, as it is far better to worship the Creator than the creation.

I mean that when the left holds the reins, the right complains and now the converse is true. Don't sweat it, because the worm will eventually turn for you and All Things Left will again be bathed in that warm, prosperous glow that only political might can legitimize. The real complainers are the media, who get unlimited license to bitch no matter who is in power.

I think that right now there is a schism between the two that is greater than it has been for a long, long time. And frankly, when you're looking for the reasons for this, you don't have to look far. "You're either with us or agaist us". Mr. Diplomacy and rational debate strikes again.

So what have we got from this thread?

My take:

We are all pretty much the same, we have a common ground and care about the environment and our fellow man, and we have respect for religious or non-religious beliefs or political point of view, except for N8, who is either high on PCP, or is just an intractable right wing man-whore.

Did I get that right?

Could somebody please explain to me the rational purpose of 'worshiping' anything?
Do you believe in nothing greater than yourself or are you just one more insignificant semi-random configuration of sequenced proteins in the vat of cosmic chili? You are no more likely to find God or a reason to worship Him in a Logic 101 textbook than shrink-wrapped in the bottom of a box of Fruit Loops.

Even if something is 'greater than myself' why would I worship it? Seriously, If we all worshiped everything 'greater than ourselves' everyone would spend their whole time worshiping. We'd never get anything done. It's a pointless exercise. What does the thing that is 'greater than you' get out of it? Nothing. What do you get out of it? A mindset that is easily talked down to and commanded. Awesome.

Seriously, please explain the point of 'worship'.

The strange thing is no where in the Bible are Christians told to "take over the government" or have their own country/state/county etc. - this hunker down, defensive, us vs. them, mentality that permiates modern conservative Christianity here in the US is driving me crazy, and has absolutely no Biblical basis.

Anyway...........................

Neither does a Jihad, what's your point?

according to a rabbi i used to talk to a lot....
"worship" doesnt necesarilly require the existance of a god... you can represent and unify all the beliefs of those who share similar values and call that "god" and worship that, not that you are necesarilly worshiping a god as a magical, supernatural entity for itself... but rather do it as a sign of respect for all those who share values with you and as a sign that you also share what that represents for them (not necesarilly a supernatural dude in a cloud with a beard)...

just like people hold their chests when they sing their anthem.. its not like you are worshiping the anthem itself, but just doing so as a sign of respect for all those for whom the anthem represents a valuable thing (an ethical system for example)...

i also felt pretty weird when i was a kid in synagogues or cathedrals (jewish mom, catholic dad) talking to and about a being whose mere existance i found ludicrous, but just a little time ago, i kinda realized i dont have to belief in a god as an entity by itself, for the worship to make sense...
just like you dont have to think an anthem has life for itself or its magical, for showing some respect to make sense...

To me, showing respect is one thing, but visiting a temple, and bowing to an invisible presence everyday is quite another. It just seems counterproductive.
