Awesome.

Who did it? I remember the thread but can't remember who you actually sent it to - was it Spectrum?

yep...spectrum
It came out beautiful.

Don't know much about powdercoating (outside of the basic process for it).. How do they do the flames? Decals? Paint? Are those powder too?

I know very little about powdercoating..the flames and flowers are not decals.

A friend of mine builds custom mtn bike frames and he sends his to a guy that powder coats, then he rubs the entire frame with a really fine grit sandpaper like 400, and then paints the custom graphics, then clear coats it...maybe that's how they do it, but when I called spectrum to inquire about the process they were not very forthcoming with the details...but it looks even better in person...I know jimmydean does a lot of powdercoating and he's really good so he may be able to tell us about the process... :sneaky:

Wow..thats really sweet looking! You should leave it stickerless IMO. Post some pics of it rebuilt.
And your opinion is good...I would no way put a sticker on that frame...maybe...just MAYBE...a teeny tiny monkey sticker in a very obscure spot where the top tube comes out the back of the seat tube...then the bike would be complete...definitely will be posting a pic when it's built...

Well, I emailed them and played as dumb as I could and they wouldn't share with me either. But the way I see it is:
1. The base coat is shot
2. The stencils are made for flames and flowers, shot with IR powder (uses an IR lamp rather than an oven) with a charged airbrush or something finner than a full on powder gun
3. Then the clearcoat is shot over the top of everything
4. Baked fully and your done.

They did say it was all powder, so that is the only way I can see it being done because the IR setup would allow you to shot and cure a small area without having to mask the whole frame for each little detail (and that has wicked detail for powder).

I have done some stencil work with my setup and it's a huge pain. I have to cover the entire part up other than the stencil because the powder goes EVERYWHERE, then bake just enough to gel the powder, then remove the masking and stencil and crap, clean everything off, then bake fully. I didn't do a clearcoat over the top, but I was just goofing in the shop with time to waste. I played with the idea of shooting the "Lifetime" logo on my Endless in powder, but it was way more trouble than it was worth.

Sweet looking frame Missy. You gotta put just a touch of velvet somewhere on that frame just to maintain some consistency in the kitsch factor

some very nice work. just curious, what did it run you, $-wise?

i've had a couple of custom paint jobs but on xc frames. can't pull the trigger on a DH frame which is mostly gonna bounce off rocks or break.

no chance I'll ever break the frame...and that's kinda a personal question...I'll tell ya how much I paid as soon as you tell me how much money you make or the size of yer weiner! hahaha!

My teammate had one made from SDG with blue velvet with white sides. I have one with red velvet with black kevlar sides. If you really want one, I might be able to have one made for you.

I might be able to talk to SDG about that
I would LOVE crushed blue velvet with the black kevlar sides...carbon fetish posted a pic of the one I would pick, but I don't see it here anymore...

I accidentally clicked the thing near his name yesterday reporting a bad post when I thought it was a pm thing...I tried to stop my browser before it did anything, so hopefully, I didn't report him. :help:
