Plus we have a point 'n shoot. And a Polaroid. And a Minolta film SLR. And a Nickelodeon 4X film camera.

That poor kid.
Is your camera the D70?

Blue, take note. That lens ROCKS on a D40. The AF is fast and quiet.

How much are you asking for it?
Not sure. Since I wasn't using it, I loaned it to my father-in-law to try out on his D40. I told him that I was going to sell it, but he could see how it compared to his kit lens. It probably hasn't been used there :)

and 5D is 2.5 years older, has more MP, and is half the price? :D

yeah, apparently there was some mirror box adjustment on some mkIIIs that did the fix. since i'm not gonna spend 4.5K on a body, i didn't follow the story too closely.

Well, you were comparing solely on the basis of noise, not price or performance...

I was at an Oilers game in late November, and stuck up a conversation with a Canon guy shooting the game. I asked him why no Mk3, and he laughed and he said, "It doesn't focus." To be fair, it doesn't happen all the time, but in some pretty specific situations. The fact that they are situations where the camera is pretty heavily used is the problem...

D70S bodies are CHEEEAP. If I can get a decent all-around lens here in the next few months I'll definitely let go of the d40 body and kit lens for one. The lack of bulk and AF on the camera (as well as lack of dials - navigating through menus to change iso is the suck) kind of kills it for me.

well from the bit i read, it wasn't a widespread, consistent issue w/ all bodies, and apparently canon has figured out the issue and recalled and fixed the affected units

then again...
The folks I have been running into have been purchasing the d300 and can't stop singing it's praises. Most have come from the 20d / 30d camp with a few 1D users and were going to step up to the MKIII. They see a op to be able to purchase two N***n bodies for less then one MKIII with out the abysmal PR baggage. Really telling is I know a couple of acclaimed photographers who have sold what was previously Nikons flagship D2XS to get the 300 and they say it beats it hands down. As for myself I have way too much invested in Canon glass to do anything but stick it out. My repaired MKIII seems to be working as intended now that I have reset all the custom functions to my liking.
as it is, i've got 7 canon-specific lenses and a flash gun, so i'm not about to take a bath just to switch systems.

There is almost nothing on a D70s that can't be changed via a quick button/wheel combo. I've even changed some settings without taking the camera from my eye.

Note: the D70 can be essentially made into a D70s via a firmware upgrade. However the screen is a bit smaller, but the menu system and AF system gets the improvements made to the D70s.

If you can stand the tiny screen these are even cheaper on CL and ebay.

That was one thing that I liked about the D300...the ginormous screen, and ability to capture with it like a P&S.

For sure. Once you're in, you're in. Unless you're stupid, rich, or someone else is footing the bill for the gear.

Where'd you pull that quote from? I love the way Nikon is starred out like that...

it's from POTN, a canon-centric site. i think they don't want nikon coming up in searches, so people usually type noink.

why doesn't the ISO show up in the EXIF? everything else does.
If I remember I batched the pics from that set in Picasa, which fvcks w/ the EXIF data.

I'll post the original tonight. I think it was 400.

PSP, there are a few EXIF viewers; try Opanda, or do an extension search for Firefox.

Blue underexposed his photo pretty badly...and that doesn't do good things with regards to noise...
Yeh. The original (properly exposed) IMHO had too much noise, so I used a super contrast action in PS I created to really crank on it and sort of try to incorporate it in the photo.

Played some more tonight, this time with the D300 mated to an 18-135 f3.5.

I'm seriously thinking about selling a bike and getting something. Currently debating between a 30D, 40D, or D300.

I've put together a 30D kit with a Canon 17-85 F4-5.6 EF-S IS USM (is it that much better than the 18-55 without USM? will a non-USM lens autofocus?) lens and Sigma 30 F1.4 for $1500. I don't see much over the 30D the 40D has than MP count.

I lust after the D300, but it just seems more blingy than anything, with the zomg 51 point AF, and I reaally need/want superb low light performance.

i want the d300 because of 51 point af, 8fps, looks cool, lets me use more nikon lenses with auto focus, live view might be useful once and a while, the mp count is pretty nice too. from what i see its the d2hs, but with higher mp count, and a lower price tag?
