Yup, I can no longer use the internet for no work stuff at all.

Here's where it gets wierd. I've been at my new gig for 90 days. So this was a mini-review of sorts.

Immediately after telling me he doesn't want me wasting time on the internet, he tells me that I've been doing a good job, turning projects around quickly and he's giving me a raise.

Huh.

I thanked him and I told him that I really only surf when my slow G-4 Mac is taking forever to process whatever. And he confirmed that I'm getting a new dual-processor G-5 with 2gb of ram and one of them fancy super large monitors.

There are ways to cover your tracks if they figured this out without glancing at your monitor in person/video...

I work in an open office, there's no way I can surf without being seen.

Plus, I think one of my co-workers doesn't like me and ratted me out.

Eh, no big deal. I'll just work more, become general manager and then surf all day.

How do you cover your tracks? No one has ever caught me surfing, but I always wonder if someday they are going to go back and check the logs and see that I am on the Internet waaaaaaaaaaay to much

BTW congrads on the raise, that sucks you can't use the internet though. Bring a mag for when you get bored :)

Delete you private data (cookies/history) regularly if you can.

Use a proxy to browse the web.

Change your DNS servers in windows (if you can) from work servers to public external DNS servers.

There are also applications like CameraShy etc...

Is there free public http proxys available? Even if there was I'm not sure I would trust sending all my http traffic through them.

I highly doubt there are many companies that even have that verbose of a level of logging turned on on their DNS servers, let alone someone monitoring it.

Small companies, probably not a chance in hell. Medium to large - possibly depending on the company. [tinfoil hat]The NSA is probably monitoring WWW in various ways too[/tinfoil hat] Free thinking Chinese citizens definately like these tactics and tools.

There are plenty of public proxy servers out there - that site has a list. There are also software applications out there too as long as you are able to download via WWW or disk and execute them (and in some cases they require no installation) you can hide your tracks even if the network is locked down pretty hardcore...

Here is a list for you...

[quote="hideaway.net]Anonymous Web Browsing

These services allow you to browse web sites without revealing your identity or IP address. Instead of directly connecting to sites, all connections are relayed through an intermediate server called a proxy. Thus from the web site's perspective the proxy is visiting, not you. Some of the services below are free of charge, while others are ad supported or impose a subscription fee.

Note that we recommend you disable ActiveX, Java, and JavaScript in your web browser's options if you're really concerned about privacy while using these services. Scripts can sometimes leak your address/identity, even when using a proxy.

In some ways it sucks, LO, but in the long run, it's probably best. I never actually got busted at my old job but when I started my new one, RM withdrawal lost out quickly to job security needs. I was amazed by how much more productive I could be during the workday w/o the distraction of tilting at the widmills of invincible ignorance that I encountered online.

I wish I had a cool story to explain my absence(like being kidnapped into sexual slavery by a cult of hot Amazons) but alas, I was simply being mindful of this sage bit of foreshadowing- "Working hard to get kicked out of corporate intranets."

G5 FTW.

Sucks that a co-worker ratted you out. Get one of those privacy shields for your monitor?

so no one thinks it's wierd that within a one minute span, I was written up -and- given a raise?

And yeah, llkoolkeg, I agree.

Come on......... make something up for your fans. :)
My wife had me committed to an asylum last year for neglecting to send her a Mother's Day card on behalf of our children.

I would still be there today but for a daring escape facilitated by Nurse Ratched's antebellum hoop skirt that HR begrudgingly assented to for "Casual Friday".

Thanks for the tips. I delete all files and cookies about 4 times a day, just in case. I try not to get caught with my pants down. I also do the "click away" when I'm browsing the internet and someone walks by. I keep the window small, less than a third the screen, at the bottom of the screen and make sure I have work up in the background. This way I look like I'm working hard....its funny, I even act like I'm studying the program hard when I hear someone coming(I'm a software engineer, so I acted stumped)....the lengths I go to cruise the internet!!

I always sandwich a corrective between positive motivators... still I think a raise was a bit much. I would have said even though you were caught effing off during your probationary period, what little work you were able to acomplish was good enough to allow me to look the other way just this one time. Then I'd pocket a handy salary cost override bonus at the end of the year. Delaying your first raise for another 3 months is like compound interest... in salary cost savings. :)

Back in the early days of RM there was a versoin of RM that was made to look like an excel spreadsheet when it was open on screen.

What ever happened to it?
