That's the answer!!!I'm thinking I need to marry a Canadian.
Colorado Springs has a lot to offer (like 9 months of riding weather) but it was bible thumper hell for me. San Diego is nice if you can swing it for sure. I tired to make it there after my active duty was up, but the job market sucked ass. Since you will have an income, it could be a hell of a nice place to land.I have 4 years left until I am in a similiar situation...my requirements are similiar to Dirts, almost identical. I am not a lawyer who pines for art school though, and have a family to watch over, so schools are a plus. Nearby military base is a plus, to have access to medical care...I am thinking seriously about San Diego or Colorado Springs...
If one were to place blame anywhere for my banning in Seattle, I think it would have a lot to do with Prost and my friend Bill. Its a long story, but I think I proved that you can be asked not to come back to the Emerald City. That's the answer!!!
But, wait, how in the world id you get 86'd from Seattle? It's packed full of peace and love hippies who accept all kinds of strange behavior! You are one talented guy...
What about the C Springs area? Say an hour radius (leaning west...)? Does the thumping spread? Thumping I can handle, its the r wing nitwits that come with it I abhor...Colorado Springs has a lot to offer (like 9 months of riding weather) but it was bible thumper hell for me. Do tell...What happened at Prost? If one were to place blame anywhere for my banning in Seattle, I think it would have a lot to do with Prost and my friend Bill. Its a long story, but I think I proved that you can be asked not to come back to the Emerald City.
I didn't do a ton of investigation. I interviewed with a few software shops years ago. One of them offered me an annual 4 resort ski pass as part of the standard benefits package. I was almost ready to go until I started talking to people there. Seemed (at least then) about 80% right wing Glenn Beck for Prez kinda folk. What about the C Springs area? Then definitely scratch Orygun off the list. Flying anywhere from here (PDX) takes a full day and costs a minimum of $800. Unless you want to fly red-eye.It'd be nice if there was a "real" airport within an hour or so drive. I still have work pending in New Orleans, Reno and Virginia. Having to travel a whole day there and a whole day back because I am really removed from the real world kinda kills the profit of each trip.
Front Range/Colorado Springs is ghetto. Sure there is some great riding, but only for three months out of the year. The summer is short and windy, filled with hail and thunder storms. Colorado blows unless all you like to do is ski. You can't even swim in the lakes.
Colorado Springs is also nice for those activities (except for the surfing of course), but if you think Reno is a soul sucking town its got nothing on the home of Ted Haggard and Focus on the Family. I've been trying to get out for almost 5 years now.
'Cept that $800/mo barely nets you a bedroom in one of those places. Well, except Pacifica...and Pacifica sucks.Santa Cruz, Monterey, Pacifica. Best places ever.
From my place, I have the Rogue river, many lakes, trails, and some fun twisties (you would want another Duc if you aint got it), and some OK skiing, all in about 20 minutes or less away. It's a short trip on a fun road to the coast, but the surf in Oregon sucks ass.But if I could have snow, kayaking, riding, all my crazy zombie day prep and surf within a couple hours, I think I could do pretty well.
How do you figure?
Pretty much cold all the time, nearly always foggy, inaccessible to MUNI/BART (making city visits still at least a half-hour affair), no nightlife, food sucks. IMO you're better off living with roughly the same amount of COL in the Sunset or Oakland. How do you figure?

The Job Market here is pretty depressed. If the military ever decides to pull chocks and leave this town it will blow up and disappear like a fart in the wind. I doubt that will happen since there are so many vital institutions here but ya never know. I suppose if your a decent Lawyer there is always work. Jimmydean is right about the thumpers also. Like JohnE says, I've learned to ignore them but its the ultra conservatard Glenn Beck/Sarah Palin for president crowd that drives me nucking futz about this town. And there are a lot of them here. If Jimmydean had come out for the software job I'd venture a guess that he would have moved or been layed off by now. The once burgeoning tech industry this town was trying to develop has gone the way of the dodo. I periodically ride the road bike up to Garden of the Gods right past an almost completely empty gigantic Intel building. Most of the other tech companies are gone too.I didn't do a ton of investigation. I interviewed with a few software shops years ago. One of them offered me an annual 4 resort ski pass as part of the standard benefits package. I was almost ready to go until I started talking to people there. Maybe if your a giant pvssy. I ride year round and I know lots of other people who do too.Front Range/Colorado Springs is ghetto. P.S. the concentration of military is far too high.
Yes, when I was looking, it was 99/00 time frame and the start ups there died, just like the ones in Bend, OR did when the bubble went. That being said, I'd move back to Portland in a heart beat if I could make it work/find work.
Nothing livable rents for less that 1200 in Bozeman, Montana's most overrated city.-Bozeman
Charlotte is probably the best bet, around 2 hours away I'd say. I know nothing about the job situation there though.Rent is not outlandish by west coast standards but the airport issue will take a few hours with either Charlotte or Atlanta
You can find some nice pads downtown PDX for $800.I looked into NC, but job market there, even for a lawyer, was pretty thin.
If I could find somewhere that I can do rent for $800 a month I wouldn't really have to work. I have seven or eight cases that are scheduled out for the next three years, so if I can fly here and to a few other spots, that will be enough work to keep me going if I live on the cheap.
how about new hampshire? no snurfing, but plenty of snowboarding, kayaking, biking, and guns. Pretty cheap in places too.And I don't care where to.
Reno sucks a bunch of dicks only like a bad gay porn could. Its a black hole for ambition, style, motivation, intellect and soul. I gotta get the **** outta here.
So I need some suggestions.
I like to ride my bicycles.
I like to kayak.
I like to snowboard.
I like to surf.
I like guns, shooting guns, and being able to own guns without fear of reprisal from the local/state government.
I like rent around $800/mo for a one bedroom one bath that's nice.
I'm an attorney, but I am fried on the business. Souless suck ****s with no real talent or ability beyond sucking money out of people. Tired of waking up thinking I shoulda gone to art school.
Give me some ideas. I'd like to be able to hit five outta six of my likes.
Riding in the freezing cold is no good, riding in hail is no good, riding in rain is no good, riding in the wind is no good. I have no idea why so many Californians try and make colorado a home.Maybe if your a giant pvssy. I ride year round and I know lots of other people who do too.
Your complaining about the military presence? Aren't you with Air Force Space Command?
So how often did you visit. I spent a lot of time there. It wasn't cold it was always between 55 and 70. Yeah, it's foggy. It's called the coast.Pretty much cold all the time, nearly always foggy, inaccessible to MUNI/BART (making city visits still at least a half-hour affair), no nightlife, food sucks. IMO you're better off living with roughly the same amount of COL in the Sunset or Oakland.
Not necessarily. Cold weather riding does have its advantages. No bugs, hard fast trails, no mud, no dust, no poison ivy, no/few jaggers, no humidity, no sun burn, and falling is much less painful in winter gear.Riding in the freezing cold is no good.
