not too obscure, really. they wrote "Kill Yr Television" back in '90 or so.

she said, she said
'you don't know ****,
because you've never been there'
she turned upon him,
took him by the hair
spun him round about,
laughing as he fell about,
sat down for a drink
in her father's favourite chair
kill your television

Grebo (occasionally spelled Greebo, although that has somewhat different connotations) was a minor UK subculture of the late 80s and early 90s, largely based in the Midlands and around the bands Pop Will Eat Itself (who had a song titled, "Oh Greebo, I Think I Love You"), Ned's Atomic Dustbin, Carter USM, and The Wonder Stuff. The Levellers and New Model Army also sometimes associated with Grebo. The musical style of the bands was more or less a blend of the more alternative forms of Indie rock, and electronica. The grebo visual style often included dreadlocks, partially shaved heads and high ponytails, baggy clothing, and strange hats.

The movement, although shortlived, was a reasonable success at the time, and influenced a number of later bands. To a certain extent it was a music press invention, a scene and style named by British indie mags, specifically NME and the Melody Maker, in order to fill the period a period in the late 80s before Grunge music and other forms of American Alternative rock broke through. It was labelled "The Scene that Celebrates Itself" by the Melody Maker alongside the then popular shoegazer movement and has since become almost totally forgotten.

Holy crap! I didn't think anyone else listened to Ned's. Didn't they have some double bass thing going (or was it two drummers)?

i think it was a double bass player setup. actual bike content - there's a trail on the North Shore called Ned's Atomic Dustbin.

i did have a copy of _God Fodder_ (clever title, no?), but was more into the Wonder Stuff myself (who actually played boston recently, but i didn't bother).

God Fodder was the only album I still have, although I vaguely remember getting the one after that also. It is pretty catchy and still gets popped into the CD player every once in a while.

Frank Zappa said it best....

I'm The Slime Lyrics
Artist: Frank Zappa (Buy Frank Zappa CDs)
Album: Overnite Sensation

I am gross and perverted
I'm obsessed 'n deranged
I have existed for years
But very little had changed
I am the tool of the Government
And industry too
For I am destined to rule
And regulate you
I may be vile and pernicious
But you can't look away
I make you think I'm delicious
With the stuff that I say
I am the best you can get
Have you guessed me yet?
I am the slime oozin' out
From your TV set
You will obey me while I lead you
And eat the garbage that I feed you
Until the day that we don't need you
Don't go for help...no one will heed you
Your mind is totally controlled
It has been stuffed into my mold
And you will do as you are told
Until the rights to you are sold
That's right, folks.. Don't touch that dial
Well, I am the slime from your video
Oozin' along on your livingroom floor
I am the slime from your video
Can't stop the slime, people, lookit me go
