I've never had to use valve extenders on my tubes....do I leave the presta valve unscrewed the entire time?? Doesn't that cause air loss? I thought you always had to screw down the presta valve

If the valve is unscrewed you only lose air if the valve is pressed down.

As for valve extenders on alot of tubes the valve is removed the extender is installed and the valve threads onto the extender.

There are no stupid questions, just stupid people who ask questions...
:)

I'm assuming this is for the CX tubies? I actually use a valve extender that has as attachment to open and close the valves through it, Topeak makes it. Otherwise, I don't like taking them on and off, and you should have some teflon tape or something on there to prevent leakage...

Yup - they don't leak much more through the valve. Vittoria makes extensions that replace the original valve. The Topeak one is cool, but is super weak alloy, so too much twist will split it open. The smooth valves work fine. You have to use a spoke or something to release them. I also like to put a dot of super glue on them and then open them up so they don't vibrate closed. Nothing sucks more than pulling a tubular tire because you couldn't open the valve.

The simple Zipp extenders get trashed at the shop. We don't use them unless the buyer insists on it, or if we're stretching a tire. Conti extenders are preferred. Tufo makes a lighter version. the Conti and Hutchison version are the same.

and i know this doesn't apply to you, but i find that some pumps have a hard time getting 120psi+ into tires with the Zipp=type of extenders.
