How many people did they can, if it was a few it was probably their version of a lay off. Except that they don't have to pay unemplyment this way. If it was just you, they were probably looking for a reason. I have worked for a couple companies that operated like this.

I think a lot of employers are doing that nowadays; saying anything else might open the door for a lawsuit.

This really hits home because I just came outta my managers office who reamed me for my own internet usage (as well as other lack luster performance concerns). Good thing I work in IT, and can erase my tracks. (Yes, from the servers, too).
